Fortunatly for JR he only needed a couple hundred yards.
He tried to make the Bronco's team the next season, so evidently he didn't play his final season "just to get back past Brian". He retired after Shanahan told him he'd only be the Broncos' #4 or 5 receiver.

Mitchell holds or shares 22 NFL records. In his NFL career, he recovered 20 fumbles, scored 29 touchdowns (four kickoff returns, nine punt returns, 12 rushing, and four receiving), and threw for a touchdown pass. He also led the league in combined yards every season from 1994 through 1996 and again in 1998. He is one of only two players to lead the league in that statistical category at least four times. The other is Hall of Famer Jim Brown, who did it five times. Why isn't he in the Hall of Fame?
Again, there is not a single return specialist in the NFL Hall of Fame. Not saying there shouldn't be one, but there isn't.

The only kicking specialists in the HOF are Stenerud, Andersen and Guy.

Devin Hester made the All 2000s and All 2010s HOF team, was a three time first team All Pro, and has 19 Return TDs to Mitchell's 13 (despite playing 67 less games). He's probably not sniffing the HOF any time soon either.

At that point he, was, all about padding his stats. Something earlier football players never wordied about.

The field position Mitchell provided Washington far exceeded the value of Hester's 6 touchdowns.

Mitchell's field position heroics enabled dozens and dozens of touchdowns.

Huh? Always? I've mentioned him twice in my entire history of posting on this site.

I'm using him as an example, since he has the record for most return TDs, that the NFL HOF has not accepted (yet) return specialists.

I mentioned other All Pro return specialists as well above.

Eric Metcalf, Billy Johnson, Devin Hester, Dante Hall, Brian Mitchell....all great kick return men for the longevity of their careers, none in the HOF.
The fact that this list of greats is so short should make hall of fame status a no brainer.

I have no argument with that.

And how long did Hester last? Clearly he didn’t, and never really developed anything like his return skills.
