Thread: The Football Transfers out

It's worse than anyone knows. This transfer/portal business is based on analytics. Athletic departments are using software to identify players they can buy. They see a player that provides the skill set they are looking for and they make him an offer. That is how we lost our players to the portal. In my mind, it's heinous.

Student-athletes are chattel; it's akin to trafficking and slavery. Players are targeted, and yes, you may argue, they are paid. But the cost of all this goes far beyond the treatment of skilled athletes as a commodity. We're losing something important while trying to fix what was a broken system. Student-athletes are pimping themselves out; it seems un-Christian.

Alabama knew exactly who Trey Amos was, exactly what skill set he offered, and they bought him to fill a temporary need. In the olden days they wouldn't have known him from Adam. When they are done with him, he will be discarded like candy wrapper.

I think people realize this and either don't care, or just look they other way.

If Amos ends up being the starter at Alabama and can hang in there for the full season, he will be drafted and guaranteed an NFL roster spot.

That isn't exactly him being "discarded like candy wrapper".

This has been happening for a very long time in the business world. Executive Recruiting search firms do this. How many people still work for the company that hired them out of college?

It is crazy that adults are upset when student athletes do this but is common in the business world.

Great companies are always looking for team members who will make the company better. This is the same thing in college athletics. Companies are figuring this out the hard way--if you don't offer reasons (pay, benefits, flex time, work life balance, etc) for employees to stay, they will leave.

I mean Mekhi garner was being projected as a second round pick before transferring. He transfers for NIL money and ends up not being drafted at all

Mekhi Garner wouldn't have started in Saban's defensive backfield. Ricks was injured part of his only season, and only played enough to make 11 tackles, 8 solo.

So again, I stand by what I said: If Amos ends up being the starter at Alabama and can hang in there as the starter for the season, he will be drafted.

I think Coach Des answered this very well on Jay’s interview. Making important decisions, just about the money, doesn’t usually work out. In Amos’ case, he is making a career decision as he has a chance to play for the best coach (maybe ever), who also happens to be the best DB coach, AND he gets paid a lot of money to do that.

I mostly agree with his opinion, as you saw that TAMU’s #1 class from a couple of years ago has mostly disbanded. Getting players that are coming for the school, the coaching staff and the community will breed a lot more loyalty than just $$$$. Doesn’t mean $$$ don’t mean anything, but that cannot be the only reason for a decision.

The more we can have success of players in the NFL, and of this coaching staff having coached those players, the better we can recruit, develop and retain talent.

Seems to me that we need more figurative “fists” to beat some sense into these guys. They will always have some love from us, but they will never have the status elsewhere that they could have achieved here!
