Thread: Marlin Contract Extension - FOUR MORE YEARS!

Yes, he gets a 1 year extension until March 31, 2024 but this new contract is for 3 years and actually doesn’t even go into effect until April 1, 2024!

$533,550 annual salary, so no pay cut there because that’s about what he was making before.

$600,000 buyout if fired before March 31, 2025. Decreases by $200,000 each subsequent year.

On the other hand, the results may not be the level of excellence some set their standards by or what they believe is achievable. They may think a championship needs to be attained 50 percent of the time.
If we really want to talk about the numbers, shouldn’t we discuss the only 1 20 win season in the last 5 years when discussing the 20 win average over the decade?

Almost all of those 20 wins are against lower level competition.

Let's pretend this made up metric for success (20 wins) is something worth aspiring to:

Over the last 5 years: we have hit the mark 1 time (last season with 26 wins - "missed the mark" seasons of 14, 16, 17, & 19 wins). We averaged 18.4 wins per season over that stretch.

The 5 seasons prior to that: we hit the mark 4 times, and the only season we missed it was a 19 win season (22.4 win average).

My primary criticism of Marlin is that we can not maintain consistent success near the top of the conference. We have 3 top 3 finishes in his entire tenure here. Only 2 in the top 2 (1 #1/1#2). So while we won the conference last year, my excitement in the program remains low. Because if history is any indication, we are in for several 4th, 5th, 6th, or worse finishes before we are back in a position to contend. THAT is what keeps interest in this program low. When you are dependent on one big season every 4-5 years to carry your fan support, excitement wanes in the "off years" and by the time the big season rolls around it's half over before people somewhat tune in. Here's to hoping Bob bucks the trend in the years to come.

    BINGO.

Be in contention more than once every 5 years, and fan interest will increase. It’s easy to schedule Southland and non-D1’s to pad the W/L record. And it’s obvious that Coach Marlin was coaching for his job in the last half of the 2022 season and last year. When a coach is in that position, that means you’re A) not producing enough and B) lost fan support.

Let’s hope that trend changes starting in November.

So you admit he has the coaching skill to win if he can allegedly just turn it off and on as you allude.

20 wins used to be automatic bid to the dance.... are we why it no longer is?

Averaging 10.5 conference wins over that span with an average finish of 4th is kinda what mediocrity is, especially in a fairly poor basketball conference for much of that time. That's also while spending much of that time as the conference's highest paid coach.

This conference just got a hell of a lot better with the new additions. I am excited for MBB, even if Marlin is guaranteed to be here for a while longer I guess but last year was fun.

    Nobody expected 4 more years.

Cool. You can hang out with the other 500 people at the cajundome for the basketball games.

Twenty wins haven’t been a ticket to the NCAA since before Marty. Maybe 20 wins against the right teams, but not just any 20.
