    Default New Research Numbers

Dr. Savoie gave the 'State of the University' presentation this AM.

Lot of big stuff, most of it (I assume) is old news here. But here's a rundown:

Beginning the implementation of a new 5-year strategic plan, 2023-2028.

We are in a half-billion dollar fundraising campaign, we're at $401M.

The 4th floor of the new Health Sciences building (old Lourdes office building) will open this semester to train 220 nursing students. This was possible by a $20M donation by the Myers Family & LHC Group. We produce the most nurses in the state.

In addition to the Health Sciences improvements, Billeaud, Madison, Montgomery, Declouet, & Lourdes Football Stadium will all get upgrades.

This legislative session, funding was completed for the new engineering classroom building, and the first phase of funding was passed to build a new sciences building, to create a STEM quad.

The old National Marine Fisheries Center was transferred to UL, the College of Education will open a lab school there. The building is 70K sq feet, on 14 acres. UL produces the most educators in Louisiana.

NIRC will be expanded to include a Level 3 testing facility; we will also be building a large Bioinnovation Accelerator. With these additions, UL will be able to handle all aspects of drug design, manufacture, testing, licensing, and federal approval.

1st Solar is creating a $1.1B facility in the New Iberia business park, believed to be the largest single business investment in Acadiana's history. This was designed to take advantage of UL's research, training, and leadership in solar energy, centering on Antoun Hall in the UL Research Park.

UL has a $2.7B local economic impact, with a return of $8 for every $1 invested.

Dr. Savoie emphasized that it is not simply our goal to produce research or economic support, but also to make the world better by producing better people, and he talked about the importance of the arts & liberal arts in educating the whole person.

in 2015, UL R&D was $62M, and in 2021 $181M, making us the #6 school in the US for research growth. In 2022 we surpassed $205M.

We produced 98 doctorates in the past academic year.

We added 54 new faculty, most ever hired at UL.

Engineering is launching its 4th satellite, we won the international Imperial Barrel competition again, we were the first and only US team invited to compete in the international solar boat competition, the choir brought home top honors at an international competition (and there were a couple of others, he went through these quickly.)

Cajuns athletes were, once again, #1 in the 'Belt for Service. He mentioned the championships & post-season appearances.

The freshman class will be the 2nd largest ever, perhaps the largest ever when the final numbers are tallied. We awarded 3,285 degrees in the past year, with 50 students earning a 4.0. UL has produced 146K graduates in its history.
