Thread: Future Conference Breakdown (What we know now)

  1. Default Re: Future Conference Breakdown (What we know now)

Imagine this, 3 24 Team Super Conferences:

    B1G
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Iowa
    Maryland
    Michigan
    MSU
    Minnesota
    Nebraska
    Northwestern
    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Purdue
    Rutgers
    USC
    UCLA
    Wisconsin
    BC
    Clemson
    Florida State
    Miami
    UNC
    ND
    Oregon
    Washington

    SEC
    Alabama
    Auburn
    Arkansas
    Florida
    Georgia
    Kentucky
    LSU
    MSU
    Mizzou
    OU
    Ole Miss
    SC
    Tenn
    Texas
    A&M
    Vandy
    Duke
    GT
    Louisville
    Memphis
    NC State
    UVA
    VT
    Wake

    Big 12/24
    Baylor
    BYU
    Cincy
    Cal
    Houston
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    KSU
    OSU
    TCU
    Texas Tech
    UCF
    WV
    Arizona
    Boise
    Arizona State
    Cal
    Oregon State
    Pitt
    Stanford
    Syracuse
    UCONN
    Utah
    Washington State

I think the SBC would be smart to then create a conference with the 14 current members and add:

I think what would happen is then you would see 62 teams left (counting Kennesaw State who is moving up next year). I think 3 conferences would be formed in G5 version of this scenario.

This would throw everything that is out there now up in the air on who would be together in the G3 ranks. I think the Eastern SBC teams would ultimately like to join with the Eastern AAC teams, while the Western SBC teams might be forced to join with the MWC teams. UGH!!!!!

    Same number of schools
    same number of scholarships
    same number of roster spots
    same number of athletes
22 people on the field at a time
    haves and have nots

not sure a reason to freak out

It is a problem if the P3 conferences decide to break away from the remainder of the Group of # schools and just only allow themselves to play for the national championship. At that point it would basically breakdown to D1 (Power Conference Teams), D1A (Group Conference Teams) and D1AA (Current FCS Teams)

what has been different exactly? you think we have been allowed to play for the NC up until now? do those schools not already get the lions share of the money? make all the rules? everything goes their way, i just dont see a huge difference. All the "other schools" still have paying customers (fans) that wont just get thrown away, the networks are too greedy. At the end of the day only 22 people can be on the field at once and there will be the same number of athletes that want to play. The haves will never play a have only schedule, they still need us.

The Autonomous 5 have wanted to pull away from the Group of 5 for years. This is the way they are going to do it. They are going to do everything they can to seperate themselves from the G5. Just because they play them (currently some play FCS) doesn't mean we will be able to play for titles. Originally the plan was for a 12 team playoff that guaranteed a G5 team. I think the G5's will be eliminated from this with the new super conferences.

There is a movement @theACC going on now to see IF @espn would be willing to add as many as eight @pac12 and what cash they would be offered

Don’t worry, the same 64/65 teams that make up the present P-5 will all end up in two to four super conferences. The difference will be they’ll finally schedule each other in their non conference schedule. Basically killing off “G5” without doing it by NCAA legislation.

When they start scheduling each other a lot of 8-5, 9-4 teams will suddenly find themselves 5-7 teams

The late Mike Slive, former SEC Commissioner, once commented when your conference grows beyond 14 teams, it becomes more an athletic association than a conference. The Big 10/SEC are well on their way to becoming much larger athletic associations. Maybe I should say experimental athletic associations running college football with everyone else taking orders. Market forces are dictating these changes. Its certainly not being done to please fans or improve quality of life for student athletes in Olympic sports.

Just this morning, on ESPNU radio, they were talking about how realignment/NIL/Facility expansion at P5 schools is destroying Olympic sports at those schools. Schools like Michigan State that have a budget over 100 mill are cutting sports like swimming and diving as part of a restructuring to feed salaries/facilities for Football.

The drive for Superconferences is destroying collegiate athletics. The university presidents will either stop this or they will figure out a way to carve out Superconferences for football only alliances.
