Napier took over a locker room that Hud had completely lost control of. He had to create a completely new cULture in there. I’m sure you saw some of the videos that were that leaked out. Des took over a program with great cULture and process in place.

I do realize that losing the number of players he did contributed to the wins and loses. But losing players had nothing to do with obvious lack of discipline that team displayed often last year.

Never mind that half of the starters transferred out. Or that two other starters were injured prior to the season starting.

Not a reply to anyone in particular, and it’s been mentioned before too. The normal player losses due to graduation and transfers hurt, but so too did the attrition due to academic difficulties. So in total we lost 40+ players from Napier’s 13 win team. Add to that the growing pains with a first time FBS head coach and we were much further back than most of expected.
I look for 2023 to be a much improved team over 2022.

Let’s make it 3 and 4 things then.

3. OL Injuries prior to the season all but derailed our chances before we even started.

4. Desormeaux coached us out of W’s against ULM and South Al. We weren’t prepared for Rice or USM.

2 losses during in game management and 2 we just weren’t ready to play.

I'd add Troy to the coached out of wins list.... I'm thinking he steps things up a notch in year 2

You know maybe, just maybe, Des is teaching kids how to become responsible adults. Not controlling every single moment of their day.

You are one hundred percent correct. At least that was the thought process. Unfortunately as a result many of the young 18 to 21 year olds were out in the bars during camp. At least that is what a couple college students that I know very well, who are probably in the bars a little more than they should be, witnessed first hand.

You are correct all those things had a lot to do with wins and loses. He still had more talent than probably rice and ulm and lost those. But none of what you said has to do with the obvious lack of discipline we saw. That was created by the process getting much softer on players from January through training camp. Don’t take my word on it, ask a player who played for both coaches about the changes in the process.

All true and you can add the lack of discipline in Des’ team compared to those of Napier. It was blatantly obvious. Discipline is all about doing the little things. Where do you develop discipline? The offseason and training camp. But our coach knew better than his predecessor and his predecessors mentor. It must be nice to know more than Saban on how to run training camp before you’ve coached your first college game.

I’ll be interested to see how camp will be ran this year.

I hope Coach Des and his staff have learned their lesson about discipline. His 2022 team’s lack of discipline cost them games. These “kids,” as he calls them, are young adult student athletes. They need to be held to a mature higher standard.

Coach Des is not their friend! He needs to command discipline starting with housing in the dorms during fall practices, in the locker room, weight room, classroom, and on the field.

The next lesson Coach Des needs to learn is how to sale his program outside of the locker room, but this doesn’t seem to be changing. Good luck competing in this new more competitive Sunbelt Conference!
