Thread: Incoming LA Freshman Landreth Wins ITA Event in Texas

  1. UL Tennis Incoming LA Freshman Landreth Wins ITA Event in Texas

Incoming freshman Mason Landreth looks ready for collegiate tennis after outlasting the field and winning the ITA Tennis-Point Summer Circuit event in Tyler, Texas.

Landreth won five matches over three days, culminating in a straight-set victory in the championship Monday morning.

Landreth, who was the top seed in the event, won the second round in comeback fashion after dropping the opening set. After winning the quarterfinals in three sets, a 6-3, 6-4 win in the semifinals put him in the finals. There he bested Kale Mize, one of the top-ranked high school players in Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-1.

Grant Landreth, Mason's older brother and current Ragin' Cajun, reached the quarterfinals falling a round before the brothers would have faced each other.

This was a nice tournament win for Mason, this was mostly either High School players and/or young college players in the tournament and most of these guys are not top P5 type guys, but very strong players.

In the first round Mason defeated Aidan Twamley who has signed with D3 College of New Jersey, he is a 2-star recruit and the #426 ranked HS player in the US. In the 2nd round Mason defeated Hughes Peus, who is an unsigned 3-star recruit and the #253 ranked player in the US. In the 3rd round he defeated Rowan Matorin who is an unsigned 4-star recruit and the #184 ranked player in the US. In the semifinals he defeated Trevor Short, who ironically defeated his brother in the 3rd round, who is an unsigned 4-star recruit and the #290 ranked player in the US and finally he defeated Kale Mize an unsigned 5-star recruit and #55 ranked player in the US.

I would assume every one of these guys will play collegiately somewhere, between D3, NAIA and even some D1 players, specifically Kale Mize, who probably has the chance to play at a high mid major or even possibly a P5 conference.

Nice solid tournament for an incoming freshman.
