Thread: Pitching Staff for 2024

UL Softball Pitching Staff for 2024

As we all know, our pitching staff was hit hard by graduation this year, with Kandra Lamb, Megan Schorman and Karly Heath all graduating. That group had a combined record of 29-9 with 5 Saves, and pitched 242.2 innings of the 412 innings pitched by the staff.
Among our returning pitchers only Sam Landry has really extensive D1 experience, though Chloe Riassetto has looked very good in limited action.

The only other pitcher on the 2023 roster who will return next season is Kyleigh Pitzer, who has yet to throw a pitch in a college game. Though she had really good stats in High School ball, she is totally unproven at the D1 level.

Of new players for 2024, only Denali Loecker, a Sr. transfer from Iowa, has any D1 pitching experience. She was fairly effective in relief last year for the hawkeyes, going 3-2 with 9 saves over 73.1 innings. Her ERA was 2.86 and her WHIP was 1.51.

Samantha Ryan, coming to the Cajuns from the Canadian National Team, where she pitched all last season and the later portion of 2022. The Canadian team is ranked in the top 5 in the world. Sam had previously represented Canada on the U-17 an U-19 national teams. Prior to her International play, Ryan was a JUCO All-American at Chattanooga State CC. In her two years at Chatt State, Sam was 40-9 with an ERA of 1.32 and a WHIP of 0.950. While she is completely unproven at the D1 level, her JUCO numbers are really impressive, and her two years of International play should carry over to D1, at least in maturity. Though we have no idea just how effective she will be here, I fully expect her to be at worst an effective starter against weak to moderately strong competition. At best, her JUCO numbers could carry over, giving UL another elite or near elite pitcher.
I expect us to add at least one more pitcher via the transfer portal, assuming we can attract one who is at least either a 1 year elite addition or an underclassman with a huge upside.
No, I have no information about what our course of action will be, or even what our coaches expect from any of our staff. All of the above except the concrete numbers for Loecker and Ryan is pure speculation on my part.

I have heard that. I have also heard rumors about another SEC pitcher, along with a few others. I believe our net is wide right now; and that it will only narrow down when one of those signs.

Personally, I think that the pitchers we have on board now [Landry, Riassetto, Pitzer, Ryan and Loecker] are good enough to get us at least to a regional championship game. If I were recruiting, I would still be looking for an elite power pitcher to lead the staff unless I was absolutely certain that Ryan or Pitzer was that person. Since we have two roster spots to fill, my other one would be a catcher, as we are deep already at every other position.

That commitment to UConn was in 2021, after her Freshman year at Chatt State. Obviously something happened after her Sophomore year to nullify that. She has pitched the last 2 years [Summer 2022 and all of 2023 season so far] with the Canadian National Team. I am still looking for her stats with the National team.

Only thing I found was the team went 2 and done in Canadian Cup last year.

Glasco, Justin and their team of coaches will have the pitching staff needed to compete at the highest level when they take the field again in 2024 . . .

You really think we need a catcher? Sophie Piskos will be healthy next year and she is a great DH and capable backup catcher at worst who batted .342 with 8 HR's, 10 doubles and 36 RBI's while playing hurt most of the year, while Victoria Valdez as a Freshman handling most of the duties back there hit .257 with 3 HR's, again as a Freshman, I see her growing into a well over .300 hitter in her next few years at UL, I am not saying I would walk away from a stud transfer, but to think our catching situation is not in pretty good hands is a mistake. Valdez threw out 7 of the 13 players attempting to steal against her.

Piskos is a Senior next year. We do not want backup catcher to be an unknown quality the following year. I am not making any statement about next season, but for subsequent ones.

Correct. Believe she was at Auburn but has since committed elsewhere.

We go into 2024 with the same catching pieces on the roster as we had in 2023 . . . I believe we will be ok . . .

Stay tuned. We could have up to 3 more coming in. A slight chance 2 could be from Florida.
