Could you defend that? Specifically, how does it produce better citizens?
I support the Cajuns, and I don't attend nearly as many events as I would like. But I am quite clear that sports serve to further the university's mission, it brings in public & private dollars, and publicity. And it provides scholarships for a lot of young athletes to attend college who might not otherwise do so... but that's only because of the money & publicity.
I can't see any way that it directly improves any other student on campus.
Students get free tickets to all sports.
