I spent 5 years in Virgina, traveling about 50% of my time in the Va Beach, Newport News, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton Roads and Portsmouth areas and I can tell you many people got upset if you called it Nor(folk) or Nor(fork), mostly in a joking way, but it is absolutely pronounced Nor (____) and there are locals whom do not like it called anything else.

Again, not as many as those in Boone, who will correct you, rather vigorously if you pronounce App States name incorrectly. I remember my first few weeks in Wilkesboro, NC , which is about 30 minutes from Boone and I met a guy who worked for Lowes (that is where the old Lowe's Corporate office was) and I said, that is cool, you graduated from App (a-Lach-En) State and he looked at me and said yes, and it is pronounced App (a-latch-en) State, please get it right.

Those in Norfolk, when you pronounce it wrong, will mostly laugh and say it is ____ not Folk or Fork.

Same people that change the “Earl” in their car? Or is that a little further north?

I believe that was part of it. Too many people were continuing to get it wrong. I think the other part was a branding thing. There is no question, people love the "APP" or "APP State" branding both inside of Boone and out. I bet Fanof71 can touch on this as well. He and I lived in NC about the same time and I can assure you that the App and App State name has helped them build a pretty solid brand.

There is only one App or App State, no conflict with any other school...Its prefered and correct to use App or App State as opposed to the 50 or 60 iterations of our school name. Thats why they don't use Mountaineers as much, cause it can be confused with WV. Exhibit A is how many times UL has been confussed with Lafayette College....

It was either 94 or 95 I think and our yearbook edition was titled or had a lead article called "the name game".

We should list 30 or so of those names and cross each one out on a shirt, leading to the real name
