Small donations are the gateway to success.

And some people complained about it. Yet, even with all the winning, that was the most important generational lesson he tried give this university.

Small donors grow into long term donors, which some grow into whale donors.

And yet, here we are with <2k RCAF members.

Several here started out decades ago with TDP and the Ragin Cajun Club. Who will replace us?

Most students believe they are overcharged and don't want to pay another penny. UNO just voted down a student fee to (re)start a football program. They are dead last on this list.

USM just posted that they have 2000 members in their athletic foundation again this year. Perhaps we should take a look at small donations.

And as the state of Louisiana continues to slash funding for higher education LA schools have no choice but to raise tuition and fees unfortunately. The cost of college in louisiana is one of, if not the fastest rising in the nation.

But aren't all the pieces of that student fee voted on individually? Does anyone have a list:
Isnt it 20 for SGA, 15 for union, 25 for bourgeois hall, 10 for ID, 20 for xyz academic society, 5 for Verm paper, etc etc etc?

Couldn't athletics take the place of an existing fee, i.e. vote that out

I believe not all fees are voted on by students:

Colleges and universities assess several different types of fees to students. Some are fees assessed by higher education boards that are authorized by state law. These fees can only be used for the specific purpose they were approved for.

Another type of fee are assessed by the individual institution. The university's leadership can propose fee to the management board which will have the ultimate say on the amount and purpose of the fee.

The third type of fee is assessed by the student body, usually through a vote. These fees are usually proposed by a student government association.

Isn't the question the allocation of what the fees go to, not adding additional fees?

Your fees are listed every semester, I paid them for both of my kids. Many of those fees are allocated to pay down debt for such projects as the new student union, parking garages, indoor practice facility at one time. Most of those fees serve the majority of students. I didn't like paying them either, but it has become the norm at universities across the country.

This is true. That is because historically Louisiana college tuitions have been absurdly low. Until quite recently a student from Texas, could attend UL and pay out of state tuition for less than it would cost to attend Texas A&M as an instate student.

Edit: Quite recently is a relative term. I am 75.. to me that could mean 30 years ago. lol

What par doesn't mention is Louisiana is the poorest state in the US outside of Mississippi. the state of Louisiana has over 54 percent of it's population on some type of federal and state subsidy and the state has a negative population growth. And let's not forget the negative business climate that has been created in this state over the past 8 years.

If higher education wants more money, it needs to be part of the solution. Spending growth needs to be capped annually, more partnership with private industry like what's being done with the primate center and pharmaceutical companies. And they need to help cultivate business growth in this state instead of participating in barriers that make it more difficult in attract new business to relocate in Louisiana. You can't keep biting the hand that feeds tax revenue and expect the same people at the top of the food chain to continually pay more taxes.
