Thread: Scholarship Limit for Football

    Default Scholarship Limit for Football

T, probably asking you but if anybody else knows, please feel free to comment.

Reading that Colorado has only ten scholarship players returning.

How will Deon fill his roster with scholarship players?

Will/can he commit future year's scholarships and have players pay their own way for the first year or two (or three)?

There is an article addressing Colorado specifically. They are only short like 18 scholarships.

They brought in 45 scholarship players through their signing class and the portal. That would leave them with 65 scholarship players and I’m sure there will be more they get in the fall.

Can you link the article please? There are limits to the number of scholarships that can be awarded in a year; they must be close.

So how is Colorado able to offer so many more than 25 scholarships this year?

    My question as well.

They better hope for a waiver.

I’m assuming that they are spreading that over 3 semesters.

Actually, it looks like they changed the rules.

From what I just read, since the portal has the ability to impact a team's roster so drastically in any given year, the NCAA just said, "Whatever."

This is really strange, at least to me. I just read an aricle on USA Today that mentions the 85 scholorship limit for the team but nothing about a per year signing limit. The article listed there may be 60 out of 85 new players.

The previous limit of 25 in one year probably only applied to incoming freshman. No limit to how many started each year if they werent freshmen, except for how it affects the total of 85.

So, the total scholarships limit is still 85 per year. What Coach Sanders can do is continue to sign athletes until the first week of school. If he is still below the 85 scholarship number at that point, anyone put on scholarship afterwards counts towards the 2024 class. He will continue to have to build this way until he red-shirts enough freshmen athletes to build his depth.

Yea, but this is one of those times where I think the NCAA got it right. To me, this is easier on compliance and just makes sense. You have a budget, 85 scholarships, you are free to manage it how you see fit, as long as you don't exceed it.

Yes, some P5's will find a way to abuse it, but for me, if a G5 program gets crushed with losing a big Senior class AND a good amount of transfers out, it allows them to get back to full strength much faster.

It's not perfect, but better than before, IMHO.

The 25 is new players is now something like 32. It was changed after several P5 complained after they release underperforming 3rd-4th string players from their NLI. They couldn't replace enough players with a hard 25 signing cap. Also by total coincidence timed to not include transfers AND transfers not needing sitting out 1 year AND NIL bidding for top G5 talent and a few from FCS had commenced.

You can sign over 25 as long as you don't exceed the 85 scholarship limit in any year.

Isn't there a tie to the no. of players your program loses to the portal. For example if you have 7 guys leave, you could sign 32 in a given year as long as you stay below 85 in total. Portal guys you get would count towards that 32. I think that is the way it works
