Thread: DDay Anniversary

    Default DDay Anniversary

My military son told me of a YouTube video showing Walter Cronkite and General Ike revisiting Normandy in 1944. Bit long. I was born in 44 one month later. Dad was TSgt on Pacific side. Four of his BILs also in Pacific. Lots of stories of the Philippines and occupied Japan. None from Europe.
    God Bless those troops.

…..Don’t know officially when they took off but my Father in law about this time was getting ready to drop the paratroopers behind the lines….after the drop they went back to get the gliders and the water was red!

Maybe they push memorial day back a week?

Sad to think the entire generation that witnessed WW2 is nearly gone...our debt to them can never be repaid...

Ike said as President that the New Orleans man who invented the Higgins Craft won the war. It's why the National WWII museum is in dowtown Nola. If you head about 2 miles up St. Charles from Lee Circle there is a historical Louisiana dedication (with the Pelican on top of the LA state outline) that describes the location of his shop. An apartment compound sits there today.

    The Greatest Generation.

Houston’s Restaurant is located at the site of the former Higgins shop. Higgins also operates shops where Delgado Community College is (the school has a commemorative plaque there) and at what is now the NASA Michaud Assembly Center.

Yes, Houston's is on the same side of the street as the Plaque. I'm nearly certain its' description states it was across the tracks on the opposite side of the neutral ground (heading CBD direction)

Might be the case. I know the sign lists the 1755 St. Charles address, which is where Houston’s is. I’ll have to reread the sign next time I’m on that end.

The Greatest Generation knew straight up sacrifice. Some made it back and carried that burden the rest of their lives. But they served.

My dad didn’t turn 18 until after the war started. When he accompanied a relative enlisting, dad realized he would fail the eye exam. So dad remembered the lines on the eye chart. Rest is history.

Yea, you might have to. I pulled street view from google but the image is terrible. Amazing how this dedication plaque will be allowed to go to ____.
