Stepping away from the forest, I think the major conferences are just crying wolf with an agenda. Some sports just have an inherent advantage based on geography. Hockey, along with pretty much every outdoor sport has something geographically that presents an advantage. The PAC12 dying a slow death where state flagships may be left behind can’t be fixed by tweaking the RPI.
The winning percentage in tourny and percent of teams that advance don't seem to support the "dying a slow death" sentiment. Big 12 and pac 12 have an over .700 winning percentage in softball tourny and half of bids advanced both rounds to okc over last two seasons. And in baseball last few years an over .500 w.p. and more than a third advancing.
Seems most conferences do more with less while one does less with more
Ncaa softball: Bama fifth in conf regular season and fourth in. Conf tournament... gets national fifth seed.
Ncaa baseball: LSwhoA$M@rs was fourth in conf regular season and fifth in conf tourny.... gets fifth national seed
At least they are consistent I suppose.
I struggle a little with the Alabama seeding, but LSU probably deserved the National #5 seed. If you take their entire body of work, they were one of the best teams in the country from day 1 until about a week or two from the end of the season. They were #1 in the country for about 3/4's of the year and still have an RPI of #5 and a national ranking of #3. They struggled a little down the stretch, but overall this is a team that is clearly a Top 8 national seed, so I don't have a major issue with them being #5. In fact, I could see a reason for them to be upset that they were not a little higher. Granted I think losing 3 of their last 4 and 5 of their last 10, probably was the reason they were not higher.
Look at mlb, each year the national league and American league know how many teams are making postseason. Now if ncaa wants a little flexibility to adjust current year in real time they could announce the guaranteed slots and then create something similar to a wild card to adjust. World cup has this also, each federation has their slots but some federations have additional teams play a playoff against another confederation for additional slots
How many other times had both Cajuns and Nichols (while on The bubble) beaten a number five national seed?
