Throwing 95 is not necessary to be competitive. Throwing strikes is anyhow one can throw 95.

Guy couldn't hit the side of a barn. Hit 100 once and never hit 98+ again.

Do we have any pitching commits coming in for next season?

I know we have a ‘24 commit from an STM pitcher

I believe Cooke was up to 95 at times, at least as a reliever. Think Jacob Schultz flirted with it as well. Otherwise have to go back to Wyatt Marks, Hogan Harris, Evan Guillory, etc.

Also think this thread misses the mark a little. I think we are hurting for a pitching coach more than we are hurting for pitchers.

Yes, that’s the guy. Guess it was exactly 7 years ago.

And as someone else said, I do remember he couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn, but he threw some heat, which was the question that was asked.

What you are describing is running rampant in college baseball. Head coaches are zeroing in on velocity and spin rates. This is all P5 and most G5s. Interestingly enough, Texas may buck this trend next season. Woody Williams is a guy that is looking for ball players that pitch well. His case has been bolstered by two players that he tried get to Texas and Pierce didn’t love their measurables. Those two players absolutely shoved against Texas this season, leading to Pierce asking Woody if there are more pitchers out there like them.

I guarantee you, Texas’ arms next season won’t lead in the eye test, but will just battle and deliver. If they have immense success, you might see the pendulum swing.

The problem really falls in many areas. When looking at high school kids, coaches are projecting their measurable and how they will match up at the college level. Select baseball has helped advanced some of their skill set so you can see more of who they will really be. The one thing that does not change a whole bunch is if you are a strike thrower, you notmally will continue to throw strikes. Its hard to go from a non strike thrower to a strike thrower. Thats where coaches get lured in to spin rate and velo.

I don’t have any insider information. Just listening to interviews and press conferences, everything indicates the pitching staff is Thib’s responsibility. If that is the case, he needs to be replaced, or moved into a new role while we hire an ACTUAL pitching coach. Give Austin Robichaux 1.5x whatever LCA is giving him and get him in the building.
