MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Louisiana track and field team heads to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with their sights set on winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Cajuns will compete with the best in the league starting Thursday, May 11, from Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
The Cajuns will factor into the podium over the three-day event and have posted some of the top scores heading into the week. Trejun Jones ran the fastest men's 100-meter so far in the SBC two weeks ago at the Maroon and White Invite (10.21). He also is currently fourth in the conference in the men's 200-meter with a time of 20.86.
Moseisha Bridgen should also be a major player for the podium this week. She currently holds the fastest time in the women's 400-meter (53.62) and 400-meter hurdles (58.05) in the SBC. In the 400-meter she's the only athlete to run a time under 54 seconds and has the hurdles locked down by 0.31 seconds.
It could be a Cajun sweep in the 400-meter hurdles as Javed Jones (51.04) leads the conference on the men's side by nearly half a second. Not far behind him in third, this spring is teammate Nathan Fergusson (51.51).
The Cajuns should also factor into field events. Men's indoor triple jump champion Jeremy Nelson looks to sweep the event after posting the longest jump this season by more than a foot (51-4.25 ft.). Three of the top four spots in the women's javelin belong to the Cajuns as well. Maria Bienvenu is favored to take home the gold if she repeats her performance at the Maroon and White Invite, where her throw of 170-4 ft. has bested everyone in the league by more than 14 ft.
