Fun exercise...our team ERA in Quad 1 and 2 games goes up to 6.42. Basically, play teams with a pulse, pitching can't stop them from scoring. Play 22 games against bad teams (quad 4), pitching is good enough to keep the runs down enough.

The performance against "good" teams is just not there. There are times, like JMU, when we pee the bed start to finish. Both reasons why success in Montgomery will be surprising for many. Nobody will take us lightly there, but I doubt better teams are skeered either. The good teams Troy, USM, Coastal, TX State will be playing for better seeds in the tourney

Didn’t Warren Nolan predict us to go 47-9 at one point in the season? He must not know our issues. I’d be happier than a pig in ____ if we win the next two series but that is very very unlikely.

But its very possible. Neither of these two teams really scare me. Ill go on a limb here and say we are the best team in the conference when we put it all together. We just struggle with consistency

It's the point that people look at our stats and ignore the fact that we've played 2/3 of our games against quad 3&4 teams. We've scored 10+ in 22 (of 33 or 67%) of our Q3&4 games and only twice (of 17 or 12%) against Q1&2. Our offensive stats are padded with an extremely weak schedule.

Who are the teams that have better numbers against the better teams on their schedule?

I decided to look at USM next since they are just behind us in team ERA on the Sun Belt stats page.

Their team ERA in quad 1 and 2 games (30 total games) goes up to 5.61, not as significant as a jump as the Cajuns jump. And I believe that the USM number is skewed due to the CCU series. Take out that series, which accounts for 25% of the earned runs given up in the 30 quad 1 and 2 games, and their team ERA in quad 1 and 2 games is 4.72, which is actually better than their current team ERA.

If I’m reading this right, you’re saying the Cajuns have scored 10+ runs in 24 different games this year? That’s not correct. They’ve scored 10+ in 16 games, including games against Campbell and Coastal. They also scored 6 in another game against Campbell, 6 in a game against Troy, and 8 against LSU.

On the flip side, they scored 2 or fewer 10 times including games against BYU, High Point, SLU, and James Madison.

You are right. I was looking at the RPI sheet and somehow didn't get the correct numbers. Multitasking at work....

Point is, we've played an extremely weak schedule. We beat up on bad teams and when we face good pitching, we aren't finding ways to win with either manufacturing runs or getting the clutch hit. This is not absolving the pitching issue which also has padded stats due to a weak schedule. New Mexico has an RPI of 215 and a losing conference record. A lot of good it's nation leading batting average is doing. It's just a matter of looking at reality and not bending stats to look good. I don't care if we lead the nation in a dozen statistical categories. We haven't won a series against a team with a winning record.
