My most recent post on the SBC board re: Marshall
Literally nobody in this thread has said that Marshall is not good. What HAS been said, though with varying degrees of tact, is that Marshall is almost completely untested against decent competition. Your record against Top 100 RPI teams is 7-6. Contrast that with the rest of the league and you will see that only 3 teams [Marshall, JMU and CCU] have played less than 20 games vs Top 100 RPI, and Louisiana and Texas State have both played over 30 against the Top 100.
The picture is even worse if you compare competition against Top 50 RPI teams. Only CCU has played fewer than the 6 games on Marshall's schedule against Top 50 RPI. Georgia State also played only 6 Top 50 RPI opponents. In conference games only. Marshall was 3-3 against teams who played 15 or more games against Top 50 teams.
The two teams Marshall played with 15 or more Top 50 opponents were Texas State and ULM. Those two teams were a cumulative 2-15-1 against Louisiana, South Alabama and Troy.
What everyone is seeing is that there is a very direct correlation between SOS and success against very good to elite teams.
The good news for Marshall is that they will, at most, face only 2 of the 4 at the top of the West division.
The bad news is that the 2 are most likely to be South Alabama and Louisiana, who are 10-2 against Troy and Texas State. Louisiana is 8-1 against South Alabama, Texas State and Troy.
