Thread: Future NIL Controversies

  1. Support Future NIL Controversies

If you think parents raised a stink when their kid wasn't starting, wait till corporations get involved when their multi million dollar investment is riding the bench.

It could go in so many directions.

A true rising talent may not see the field like he normally would have in the past simply because he isn't paid as much.

On the other extreme, coaches could get fired for ignoring the big buck players.

In the end you will no longer see the best possible team on the field.

In all likely hood you will see the most recognizable team on the field.

There are many other nightmare scenarios that will play out, this is only one of them.

    Said this months ago.

If anybody thinks a university president or the AD isn't gonna get a phone call from a deep-pocket booster making huge NIL investments that aren't resulting in his investment starting, you're fooling yourself.

"I ain't paying for that boy to sit the bench."

I think you're missing the mark just a bit. Will there be some of that, probably. But these mega NIL deals being made aren't being made as an investment. It is truly just buying a player because they love the school that they are supporting, its just above the table now. I dont think someone shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars are doing it in the name of an investment. Think about collectives, thats just guys pooling their money together with no real return in sight.

I agree with this take. It is not about an investment but buying players.

If it wasn't about investment they wouldn't bother making full blown commercials for their businesses.

That is part of the requirements. You have to do something for the money.

And while I used the term "investment", I think the folks paying the big NIL $$$$ are looking to "touch the cloak" (I think that's how Zoom Zoom puts it) and live vicariously through the kids they pay.

That sense of self-importance ain't gonna be too fulfilling when the player you're living thru isn't even on the two-deep.

They are choosing who will be the face of their business. This is very much about investment.

No business will knowingly or willingly throw away their reputation just because they like a school.

It's an investment whether they admit it or not.

Before NIL, those investors got no investment exposure at all other that what was in the know underground. It was all under the table.

Now, the exposure is in the fact that they are supporting the football team, the baseball team, etc. They can do commercials that show that now. They can put it on billboards. From an investment standpoint, I don’t think they really give a rats ass that their player plays. The smart ones strategically place their money on players that do play. On the other hand, we do need a full cast of players to make a team so and NIL contributor that solidifies the role player part of the roster may get additional benefits from just being that NIL supporter.

I believe that the concept described above is nothing but a red herring in the whole scheme of things.

Also, investors like the personal injury attorneys get a whole lot more bang for their buck with their billboard advertising when they can incorporate their NIL investment.

    Disagree.

They aren't throwing away their reputation. I don't think anybody cared or cares if Kyren Lacy showed up in a lawyer's commercial (unless, of course, he gets caught with a live boy or a dead girl).

It's an excuse to give them money.

again, if they are able to get them for a photo shoot, its seen as a bonus. if a guy rides the bench, i dont see the donor, or money man, saying "hey get him in the game, he is in one of my commercials!"

Disagree, when your name is on it, it's an investment. Whether they like it or not.
