After the game tonight against Northwestern, it may be suggested that the pitching rotation by committee be subject to a slight change.
Each pitcher should get the lessor of reaching conditions which would ordinarily result in a pitching change or 1 round through the lineup starting Friday.
That way, if a pitcher is on his game, he could get up to three innings without an opposing batter getting to see him twice.
It may be interesting to see what the Covid Chickens will do when their hitters do not get more than one look at our pitchers in any given game and at most twice in the weekend series.
As Rawls may be starting both Friday and possibly Sunday, they would get their second look two days apart.
Pitching by committee might just well become a thing.
That just furthers many opinions that we're basically guessing right now.
Look, I love the fact that they FINALLY gave Cooper a friday start, but they did him no favors by closing out TSAB and then giving him his first weekend start in a hitters park on 3 days rest. Even with that in mind, he didn't pitch poorly. As you well know, a few seeing eye singles cost him 2 runs that he didn't really deserve. Single runs in 4 straight innings won't break you, but our offense was late to the party last friday.
Cooper has earned a real opportunity to start on a full week rest on a friday night. But the idea of starting the same guy 3 times in 6 days is so foreign. It screams "WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO" at this point in time.
The seeing eye singles really got him bad, extended innings and was Rawls undoing. We are educated guessing right now. Cajun fans are unfamiliar with guess work (40+ games in) around our pitchers. Team ERA has gone from 3.37 in 2021, 4.24 in 2022 to 4.74 and climbing. Team ERA was 5.07 in 2019 Robe's last season and we won just 28 games.
The ERA has gone up 0.60 runs in a week. We need to stop the bleeding fast fast
There appears to be no dispute anywhere (fans, coaches, players) that Rawls has earned the opportunity for a Friday night start. But that start needs to be with adequate rest.
The situation which Rawls was placed in last Friday night at JMU was in-fathomable.
In fact it was 2 days rest after three outings within a period of 8 days where he was called upon to warm up at least three times and to throw 135 pitches, many of which were under stress circumstances.
He was called upon to pitch tired.
What is happening in this 5 game week appears to have nothing to do with any of that. In fact, I don’t believe that any fan that is knowledgeable about baseball really has a full understanding on what the coaching staff is attempting to accomplish with this pitching rotation.
While I have attempted to give it a shot at a partial explanation and provide what may be a couple of advantages which may come from it, one thing I hope is that once these games are over, that Rawls gets adequate rest before his next start.
Let’s get a win tonight and shoot for a couple this weekend. Win by committee weekend.
