Verne Lundquist would call them Louisiana state all the time and their fans hated it for some odd reason. One of their main arguments they always use is why are you so ashamed to use Lafayette? You should be proud of the city! Yet they don’t use the same logic when being referred to as “Louisiana state”

It's hilarious to see the hypocrisy on that to the point where one of their marketing guys tweeted out "Do not call us Louisiana State." It was funny watching a few Cajun fans catch that and give him a hard time.

What is ironic in all of this is they do exactly what they accuse us of doing. "LSU" is a shortened version of their official name nor is "Louisiana State University." Funny how that works.

Can someone please explain to me what is preventing our school from using "University of Louisiana" academically? Why do we not put that on our academic branding or our diplomas? That seems like the obvious final piece of the puzzle to me.

Because the state legislature banned that through a ridiculous law in order to protect LSU.

Ok - so what happens if we do it? Lose funding I assume?

The war is over. Louisiana is the victor.

The name change has to be approved, which it won't. Plus, doing that would create a sour attitude with the other schools in the UL system. That's why I always said it wasn't smart for Louisiana Tech to act the way that they do. When they want something like a new student union or more funding, they have to get approval from board members associated with schools like ULM to get what they want/need.

The good news is that the athletic brand has no bearing on the law as long as the school doesn't call itself "University of Louisiana." The name "Louisiana" is a loophole in all of this which has been widely accepted nationwide outside of a few schools within the state. The overall battle has been won.

Nothing is preventing us from using LOUISIANA academically as well as athletically. Only UL and LSU have Carnegie R1 public university designations in the state. We are accepted nationally as Louisiana athletically. It is time to flex our academic muscles and just begin using it academically. Institute that change using the following logo:

This is a good compromise that I could get behind.

After a Judge ruled that the governing body over the UL System was not allowed to name schools under its authority, (even though no law prohibited it) a law was enacted that allowed a name change.

The law specifically states that the school's full name "University of Louisiana" cannot be used alone. That they must include a location clarifier in the initial description.

This does not prevent academics from referring to themselves as "Louisiana."
