Thread: Grassroots Campaign for the Next UL Mascot

Albineaux made it to The Vermilion! I know it’s not the most popular read on campus but hopefully this gets the students talking more.

If anything has been accomplished, people all over the campus, the state, and the country now know Cayenne has been gone. His presence was so insignificant, that he could disappear for ten years and have a horrifyingly large amount of people not even realize he’s missing. That’s really a tragedy.

Not sure why you insist on grasping at straws.

    Cypress Swamp predates Cypress Lake.

It was a buffalo wallow that attracted alligators and eventually Cypress trees.

The Cypress trees and Swamp predate UL.

When the school was first established there were no drainage ditches and the water all collected at Cypress Swamp.

At first the area was fenced off to keep wildlife out, including alligators. In the early 19teens the hog farm slop was drained into Cypress Swamp. It was viewed as an eyesore at the time.

Then when roads were built on all four sides of the Swamp, the water drained away in the ditches. This cleared and dried things up and the area became known as Cypress Grove where plays were performed in the 1920s and 1930s.

During WWII the area was RE-flooded and called a lake.

The Campus Swamp is a legitimate Swamp. The trees were planted by nature.

Cajun field has been called the Swamp for longer than Florida. Spurrier got the idea after seeing Brian Mitchell's Sultan of The Swamp media cover.

Much like the Original Swamp, Louisiana needs to reclaim it's alligator heritage.

If we were to choose the Catahoula, I am 100% certain you would never see any reference to leopard. It is not required. The only people who would mention it would be our haters and those wanting to foment dissension. The same thing would be true if we chose Gators.

If we did choose Gators, I would be completely on board. I hope you would say the same if we choose Cataholuas.

ESPN already confuses Louisiana with Lafayette College and puts up the "Lafayette Leopards" logo from time to time.

It's been over a year since I saw a thread with Lafayette Leopards but if Catahoula Leopards becomes a thing, I know the confusiom won't only be in my mind

That's the thing, the proclamation would be starting from scratch.

As for the Catahoula Hound, I get the idea of it being unique for a mascot, but it won't push the Brand the way a Gator will!!!

For the first 17 years, Louisiana’s football stadium was simply known as Cajun Field. In the summer of
1988, then-Strength & Conditioning Coach Mickey Faulkinberry suggested referring to Cajun Field
as “The Swamp”. The name stuck for various reasons. To start, the field surface is set two feet below
sea level in a natural bowl.
