Uh, yea. In fact, as a group, we should ban the comparison of any team to 2014. It's a ridiculous thing to do. That team was a shooting star. Once in a lifetime.
App St is obviously improved. They played Campbell closely like we did. Their friday night guy had a very good changeup and plus slider. He got ahead of our hitters all night long. Credit to him for gutting it out after we loaded the bases in the middle innings, then just came in and switched from a change up/ slider mix to pumping fastballs the third time around the order. I know that surprised me. I'm sure it surprised our hitters. Also, Drumheller (I think) their catcher is excellent defensively. He changed the offensive plan on the base paths a few different times.
App St offense put pressure on Hammond from the beginning. And really, we were a Max Marusak big league defensive play at third from being down big. I give Tate a lot of credit for coming in and shutting the door. That's a big development for us.
Bottom line is, we just flat out got beat. They were better last night. Our big boppers didn't do much and you can't get off to bad starts on the mound on friday nights. It's just that simple. App St is not a bad baseball team anymore.
Also, the home plate umpire was as bad as we've seen at the tigue in years. Absolutely atrocious. If you have twitter, go look at some still frames that Nick posted to RR of pitches that were called strikes. No where near the zone.
The 2014 team lost the first game of our regional that year to Jackson St. soft throwing lefty and we had a ton of strikeouts too. It happens, it’s how you come back from it the next day that matters. 2014 team obviously made up for it. I think our guys will come out today ready to fight.
Also, yes Ben Tate’s performance last night was major bright spot. I wouldn’t mind sliding him to the starting Friday role.
Man…I really didn’t think Blue was that awful. I thought his zone was super tight most the game and widened it late but otherwise decent.
