LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana men's tennis team extended their winning streak to four and improved to 3-0 in Sun Belt Conference play at the Youngsville Sports Complex on Sunday. The Ragin' Cajuns earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over South Alabama, their first over the Jaguars since 2015.

Congratulations to the tennis team. Way to go beating South Alabama for the first time since 2015. Keep up the good work.

The last two matches (Troy and USA) have shown the grit of this team. They have had to battle to the end with two very good teams in Troy and USA.

This team is not as dominant as last years team was during the regular season (they are playing without one of their best players in Oriel Fillat Gimenez all season), but they are a gritty bunch. Gimenez was 16-4 last year playing mostly at the #2 and #3 positions. Karlo Kajin who missed the end of last year with an injury has been the dominant player for the Cajuns so far this year going 11-3, but the real surprise has been true freshman William Ribero who has been forced into action at the #6 position and has gone 6-3 including a 3 match win streak vs Coastal, Troy and USA and won 5 of his last 6 matches that were completed.

Gimenez has been a big loss for the Cajuns, but some of the younger players have really stepped up for them.

The Cajuns slipped out of the top 75 the last couple of weeks, where they were as high as #55 back on March 1st and then #70 on March 7th. But I have a feeling that they could be back in the top 75 when the rankings come back out tomorrow with a really good chance to up that in the last couple of weeks as they play current #71 Old Dominion and #69 Georgia Southern in upcoming matches.

The Cajuns are currently 10-6, but all 6 of their losses have been to top 55 teams, in fact their worst loss was to #53.

    #20 Tennessee
    #37 UTSA
    #38 Texas Tech
    #43 Tulane
    #51 LSU
    #53 Washington

Some nice wins over teams that have been in and out of the national rankings like:

    Portland
    Charlotte
    A&M-Corpus Christi
    FGCU
    USA

Unfortunately none of these teams are currently ranked, but we are currently the only undefeated SBC conference team.

    USA is 3-1
    ODU is 3-1
    Georgia Southern is 2-1
    Coastal is 1-1
    Troy is 1-2
    JMU is 1-3
    USM is 0-2
    Georgia State is 0-3

We still have Georgia State, USM, JMU, Georgia Southern and ODU left on the schedule.

Why did they play in Youngsville instead of Cajun Courts?

I’m not exactly sure. But the women played at reds earlier this year. It could be that the courts need to be resurfaced.

Cajun courts has 6 courts and you need all 6. So if one is unplayable you need to either play one court after or move the match. I would assume that is the issue.
