What date would homecoming be? Any idea?
USM feels that the two schools are pretty much mirrors of each other. USM has Miss St and Ole Miss that look down to them and treat them like little brother and UL has LSU A&M BR, both schools have to fight for every cent they get from their states and both schools have very similar student sizes.
I don't know the terms of the contract, but I thought that was about as close as we'd get to P5 home game since 2010.
A bunch of us went, rented a house in NOLA, went to the game and stayed for labor day weekend. It was a really great time.
Attendance was only 22k. That was certainly a disappointment. But aside from hosting Boise in a million-degree heat, that's the best "home" game that we've had in several years.
I don't disagree with Maggard's desire to always have 6 home games (1 x FCS, 1 x peer G5, 4 x conference?) It does stink to watch our peers scheduling and hosting P5 teams with what appears to be a bit or regularity. Beating them in several instances also.
If it takes scheduling these in NOLA, I'll take it. We tend to do well there.
Moo state had played in Ruston, mobile and Hattiesburg. If I recall they played in mobile the year they were number 1 for a bit. There was no reason to do a one for one with them and have our home game in Nola. We had to pay for the dome then split ticket revenue with them. It should have been a 4 game series with 2 in Starkville, one in Nola and one in Lafayette. That is why it was a horrible idea. To be fair to farmer, we were also pulling big crowds to the Nola bowls so it may have seemed like a good idea. But when you get the chance to host a P5 you do it especially when that specific team had no problem traveling to our peer schools.
Thanks for the details. Forgot about the stipulations for the game. Can't imagine we did too well on that.
I understand the appeal of scheduling it in New Orleans. Should have been a bigger draw. Still had a good weekend out there and given the choice between no P5 home and a P5 neutral in New Orleans, take NOLA all day. That's the closest we've sniffed to getting a P5 to coming to Lafayette in a decade. And it may be another decade or more before anyone visits, if at all.
