Thread: LOUISIANA - Athletics and Academics

Default LOUISIANA - Athletics and Academics

I still don't understand why have branded athletics as LOUISIANA, but not academics. We will always be the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This is like Texas (University of Texas at Austin) or Fresno State (California State University at Fresno), Nevada (University of Nevada Reno), Wisconsin (University of Wisconsin Madison), or Nebraska (University of Nebraska Lincoln). Why not use the LOUISIANA reference in all things? And, now that we are the only Carnegie R1 university in the UL System, why not do it.

Here are logos that UL could use for academics and athletics and still be within the letter of the name law.

Pretty sure the law all the haters reference is the reason. Law outlines the name of each academic institution. It does not outline anything in regards to athletic branding.

Not that the Louisiana branding isn’t important (because it is), but most Texas alumni that I know use “Texas” for athletics, but if you ask them where they went to school they say “UT Austin”.

Because the state legislature, 65% of which are LSU graduates, will not allow it. The only way to accomplish what you're suggesting is to become a private school. Do you think this current administration is capable of raising those kinds of funds?

    Same in Tennessee. It’s UTK

Should there be a way to factor in academics status and rankings in to athletics rankings? For example if two g5’s are tied by all measures for last spot in some tournament should the nod go to the R1 academic school. Or maybe even pool the bowl money and give 65 percent of payout to the higher academic school?

Louisiana is 100% within it's rights to "brand" every aspect of the school as "Louisiana" academics as much as athletics.

"LOUISIANA" is stand alone branding and 100% legal.

What the school can not do is use "University of Louisiana" without adding it's at location.

When it gets to that point, APR is used.

not necessarily, that is only to allow 5-7 teams in, doesnt mean ties couldnt occur elsewhere and with different records and other sports. Also APR is only the academic success of the prior six years of athletes, not the status or stature of the entire university. See also “giving” good grades to athletes in easy classes can also increase APR, but hopefully not get you to tier I.

Exactly. Plus, the logo has the official name in it with the LOUISIANA reference. That is exactly how Texas does their logo.

    TEXAS
    The University of Texas

No need to use UL Lafayette academically. LOUISIANA is legal athletically and academically.

We had objections when we first started using LOUISIANA athletically. We stuck with it and were successful with the brand. Do the same academically. Besides we earned it with our Carnegie R1 ranking that only LSU and Tulane also have.
