Great game! nice contingent is UL fans. Rice is better than last year, but they had to be.

    Very entertaining game

I’m not sure that’s the issue. Difficulties were on all forms of the stream

It appears the team is as advertised. Offense is the strength. Looks like pitching will need some weathering to get consistent.Overall, a good opening night game. We will just need to figure out how to win games while the team gets its footing (as they did last night). I am a happy camper now that baseball is here.

    Few observations:

    1) Our baseball fan base owns Houston area fanbases
    2) That's about as bad a defensive performance (minus CJ and that nice play by JT at 2nd) as we'll see all year.
    3) It was windy and cold. Not an excuse, but a factor.
    4) Rice has dramatically improved on the hill. Offense is still anemic. We gave them 3 of their 4 runs.
    5) Even though the bullpen walked way too many, I liked the approach. Thought Ben Tate and Theut got squeezed a bit down the stretch.
    6) Really really like Moody's stuff, as I have since I saw him in the fall.
    7) Not sure if Veillon missed a sign, batter missed a sign or the Rice catcher is a freak, but that first out at 2nd in the 3rd can not happen and totally changed the inning.
    8) Heath Hood seems to be ready for a bust out year. I know we've said it on the pod over and over, but he is severely under appreciated.
    9) CJ has got to stay at 1st base. That was big league defense.
    10) Most of our quality ABs came from guys not named, Brock, Rocc or Debo last night. That is a good sign early in the season.

1-0 at the end of the day. On the road. In the cold. Against a team that is obviously much better than last year. I'll take it.

The crowd noise was kind of confusing on the radio. There were cheers for nearly pitch. Threw me off, but it sounded like a good atmosphere.

Good thoughts. Rice’s catcher is very good defensively. I really thought Hood broke out at the end of the season last year so I was very excited about this year for him. He is just sound, dependable, and unfazed in any situation. I get the sense there is more swagger with the guys so far this year.

I am hopeful the pitching staff will find their rhythm. It appears there is talent. It will be a question of roles and consistency.

Speaking of roles, I thought Jake Hammond handled the moment very well. Couple bad luck plays away from getting the victory. I think with a couple better relay throws and if DeBo catches the pop up, he goes 5 solid (maybe more) and the Cajuns never lose the lead.

    Oh well, learning experience.

Well said. I’m trying to get back into Cajun athletics and live a long way from Lafayette, so I have followed this fan board more.

One early observation I have is there are passionate fans, there are knowledgeable fans, there are fans who seem to be beaten down and there are some downright funny people.

From afar, just sit back and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. While not perfect, think the baseball/softball teams are gonna get after it this year.

They compete man. Something that is not as common as it used to be.

I think he was solid and I can definitely see why he is in the spot. He responded well and had good strike out stuff. He can really dominate at times and I think with more outings he will get more consistent. I thought he was pulled earlier than necessary but Deggs is clearly playing the long game. I’m intrigued to see our other weekend starters in their roles.

Well, let me be the first to officially welcome you back on board. Shameless plug for the podcast, but Ragin Review plan to have a wrap up show every Sunday after the weekend series.

I've learned to only follow in game threads if I have no other way of following the game. It is entertainment to go back and read the following day though. All in all, I love our baseball fan base. Even the Kooky ones. It's like bringing a drug addict to thanksgiving lunch. Adds a little spice.

People just need to remember it's baseball and not football. We have to tweak our mindset when following a baseball club over 56 games.

I bet he and Seth will take it easy with regard to pitch count early in the season. Especially in the cold. I see a lot of 3-4 inning outings (starters and middle relievers) for the first month of the season. Roles will naturally define themselves with this staff, I think.

But when Jake is hitting his spots, he's going to be a handful. Especially when that little splitter or whatever it is that he throws has extra bite.
