Thread: Metro Conference

  1. #1

    Default Metro Conference

    Early ‘90s Metro

North: BC, Cincinnati, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, St. Joseph, Virginia Tech and West Virginia

South: ECU, Florida State, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (FL), South Carolina, Tulane and Southern Miss.

I’m asking the old heads here, Boomers in particular…did the Cajuns have a shot, dare I say, reject an invitation into the Metro 30+ years ago?

I ask because these teams in the south remind me of the games I attended as a kid at Cajun Field in the ‘80s.

I can’t answer that question but I’m pretty sure the metro was never a football conference. When we played all those teams it was when we were independent.

While cleaning out my deceased, great uncles house this past weekend, I came across a log of old Cajun cups.

    ‘85 Football Schedule-

    Home:
    Memphis
    Idaho St.
    ECU
    McNeese

    Away:
    Auburn
    LaTech
    Wichita State
    Southern Miss
    Florida
    Nevada
    Tulane

Just feels like a Metro schedule. Our ‘85 basketball schedule was pretty exciting too.

I believe what actually happened was someone was gauging our interest in taking part in the Metro. Authement flat said we weren't interested.

Older guys like me, help me out. I use to know the whole story but its been a while.

What a waisted opportunity! It really make you feel for Southern Miss and their great history. It also begs the question as to why ECU, Memphis and Tulane are still stuck as a G5.

Side note, these ‘85 cups read, “Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns” around the brim. And also say, “Ragin’ to Excellence” on the bottom. Hardly the case…lol.
