I know they were joining in 2023 but has the Big 12 made it official yet?
You know who would have loved to be in the same conference with Rice? Doc A. Conference memberships have Academic repercussions.
Also, our Houston area Alumni base is HUGE. Fundraising, fundraising, fundraising.
Finally, we would have instant rivalry with Rice. Football game last year had A LOT of jawing back and forth on the field. Baseball series had that as well, including the fans. Actually, them being private would probably add to that rivalry.
There is "juice" there. There is no juice in San Marcos.
I agree. It's easier to build your fanbase in the AAC. Much easier travel to Memphis, Philadelphia, Houston, and DMV as compared to Huntington, Boone, Monroe, and Statesboro.
We also need something new to excite the fanbase again.
If the AAC falls apart, the Sunbelt will be there or we get our natural LA Tech rival by joining C-USA.
Make the move if invited.
If new funds in a new conference are not there then they are not there, but you should never look at them from a one or two year view.
A 10 or 15 year view, after the existing teams make their grab is the proper view.
Exit fees are a one time on recurring blip that can be paid over time so they should "almost" not even be considered.
But if there is no TV money to be had after the dust settles, that should be considered.
Y’all are nuts! The Football and Baseball are EXTREMELY better in the SBC. For the love of god avoid the new AAC at all cost.
I’m not worried about academic alignment. I’m worried about being in the most athletically competitive conference.
There is juice with TXST on the diamond. We just own them in Football so it’s not there. I’ll give you the alumni base in H-Town. That does hold some water.
Do you not agree that the SBC has a clear advantage heading into the ‘24 expanded CFP? If so, you must see the value in staying in the SBC.
great point, it would be nice if the ncaa stepped in and said no school can “move up” to P5 unless they are R1, and for those already in P5 if their academic rankings drop (set an amount of slots, maybe 75 spots? but certainly if they lose tier 1 or never had it) they get a warning and then are out if it continues.
No. I don't agree.
The group of UTSA/SMU/Tulane/Memphis/ECU/South Florida has just as good a chance of producing a Playoff team as does the group of UL/USM/stAte/MU/App/CCU.
There will NEVER be a clear favorite among the G5 conferences as to who produces a playoff team. There is just too much parity going forward. Schools that take care of their own business will have the best shot.
I have always felt that if we are not in a P5 conference, then our best home would need to be in a Division/Conference made up of the best/most important G5 schools in our region.
For us, that is Rice, SMU, Tulane and Southern Miss.
We can agree to disagree. Remember, SMU is all but out of the AAC as it looks like they are heading to the PAC.
As a side note, I’d personally rather be conference foes with LaTech than Tulane. Overall better athletics and I absolutely hate the Bulldogs.
IMO, top to bottom, the SBC is the strongest Football G5. But I respect your opinion as we both want what is best for the University of Louisiana.
