So post Covid era, Des will only take JC players that have burned their Red Shirt?????.....going forward that is the only way a JC could have 3 yrs eligibility remaining. Limiting yourself to only this one narrow variable for JC talent IMO is far past stupid.

Especially true knowing P5s are far more interested in recruiting away YOUR talent vs signing JC.

3 yrs eligibility remaining was pretty much a given through the Covid years. Only the most recent JC players wouldn't have the free Covid year. Not adapting to this reality is to put it frankly.....stupid.

That's one view. Here's another after having this discussion with Napier's staff while he was the head coach.

The ratio of JC signees having a significant impact on a program are about 50 percent in their first year. For every Harry Peoples, you will get another that may take an entire season to learn and get comfortable in a system. Now, if the first season is a wash with few actual reps on the field, that leaves 1 year of possible significant contributions and then the staff has to fill that position on the board again. Signing a JC athlete that is still raw but has the traits you are looking for and has 3 years of eligibility left, gives the staff the time to develop them in your system.

A example of this is the late signing of DL Marcus Wiser. A number of people on this board said he wasn't a great signee with few offers. He was the best DL on the team for the first 4 games before he was suspended. He will still have 2 more years of eligibility.

OL Quinton Williams also signed last year. He came in and he had to adjust to the level of scheme, and he ended up playing more reps as the season went on. He has 2 more years of eligibility left.

You can go back further under Napier and Nigel McGriff, Kendre Grant and Jasper Williams all came here with 3 years of eligibility. Guess what, all played significant reps this past season. We have a system that is working just fine. I'm not suggesting they wouldn't take a JC athlete that was special with 2 years of eligibility left, but it's highly unlikely you will ever see a bunch of those signees here. They have a system and it's proven successful here at UL. That's why you need to have coaches that can evaluate kids, project and coach them up.

Someone mentioned Kansas State because their former coach won alot of football games with JC recruiting. It certainly made sense because they are located in the footprint of the Jayhawk JC Conference and close enough to Texas JC. Synder also knew he wasn't going to out recruit Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and other top programs for the best HS athletes.

Chris Klieman is recruiting far more HS athletes than JC. He signed 21 in his 1st class, only 4 were from JC. After playing in the conference championship game this past season, he signed 26 athletes and only 3 are JC. He's using the transfer portal to fill a few positions, but he and his staff are developing HS athletes. Even Nic Saban has stated they still have to develop high school athletes. Our staff feels there will be less turnover going that way, or at least keep athletes in your program longer.

also they dont have to sit out but they still could choose to sit out for the transfer….

For the players that “have” to go to JUCO because of grades, can one really make up 13 years of school in just two years? Plus those two years, so really 15?

A number of them RS 1 yr and can transfer after completing the requirements, playing only 1 season. Not all had to attend JC because of academics, but they had few options to play, needing the time to develop physically and as a player.

Schools are afraid to redshirt now because some think it will result in an automatic transfer but now a slightly more mature athlete who transfers in will still have his RS year available.

A JC player can transfer to a 4 year institution after 1 year if they were academically eligible to attend a 4 year college out of high school. No need for redshirt or degree from the JC. This is what CMD is after. Plus there is less of an academic risk to UL.

You want to have team chemistry, and time to get your priorities in line. You can’t do that with wholesale changes every year.

Adding a JUCO here and there with less than 3 years is hardly "wholesale changes".
