Thread: Transfer Portal affecting JUCOs

  1. #1

    Default Transfer Portal affecting JUCOs

An article in The Athletic today, stating that the number of JUCO players signing with P5s in football has dropped by 50%. P5 programs are looking at transfer portal first and at JUCO, as a distant second.

In turn, that has led to more JUCO talent being available at the G5 level. This will be an interesting trend to follow I think.

Their system and approach on JC transfers remains the same as it was under Billy Napier. They will only sign JC athletes that have 3 years of eligibility left to play.

I try to base my opinions on things on the facts of the matter. When the facts change, my opinion often does as well.

The facts of JC recruiting appear to be changing dramatically.

The approach should be...is this player a starter or someone who can contribute immediately. If so take them. Who cares how many years they have left.

I tend to agree with this. The landscape has changed dramatically, so there is a need to re-assess your approach. It doesn't necessarily mean the approach changes, but logic says it probably should.

You want to have team chemistry, and time to get your priorities in line. You can’t do that with wholesale changes every year.

Kansas State has been a big time juco school for many years and have done pretty good.

3 yrs eligibility remaining was pretty much a given through the Covid years. Only the most recent JC players wouldn't have the free Covid year. Not adapting to this reality is to put it frankly.....stupid.

The 3 needs to back to being a 2, there are no more freebees.

Players who entered JC in past 2 years don't get the "free" covid year so JC players available this year included the 1st true post covid players. From this point forward nearly all JC will only have 2 years eligibility remaining (vs nearly all having at least 3 yrs left the previous 4 years)
