Agree, we do NOT need the Chicken as a mascot.
We talk a lot about a lack of tradition at UL. We have tradition when it comes to the Bullgator on campus in The Swamp. We have a football stadium called The Swamp. What better mascot than the Gator. Here is a picture of what that perfect mascot could look like that someone created a while back. This costumed Gator would be perfect on the sidelines and would represent us well. We already have the live mascot in the Swamp on campus.
I would also submit that it is time to replace the tired, old Ragin Cajun logo with Pepper that has been around for decades with an updated logo (we got rid of the pepper a long time ago). Use the "Cajuns" logo that is on our baseball uniforms and basketball warmups, except replace the star over the "j" with a FDL. We had this same jersey back when UL used the old St. Louis style USL cap. See photos of both.
We will always be the Ragin Cajuns. But, many fans and media already refer to us as the Cajuns and we refer to our stadium as Cajun Field (not Ragin Cajun Field). No confusion as there is no other team with that name. This is not unlike Notre Dame using the "Irish" instead of the Fighting Irish. We are still the Ragin Cajuns, just shorten the logo with a clean, modern look as "Cajuns".
If we have to keep the Ragin Cajuns logo, change lettering and include the FDL, removing the pepper. We can get creative on a redesign.
. . . the bullgater has the physical characteristics to be just as good as the chicken . . . A snout as opposed to a bill . . . make the mascot Russel’s retirement gig . . . not in the suit but as the mentor . . . we can pay him a nice retirement stipend and he can give of some of his retirement time making the bullgator a bigger than life mascot . . . always played by a student learned by the greatest . . . surely there would be a line of students applying for the role . . . and to assure you get the best, make the periodic winner the beneficiary of some scholarship . . . and hopefully if Russel no longer wants to be involved we find a worthy past bullgator who does and could step into his role . . .
. . . I suggested this role earlier when Feb 4 was announced, just not in this much detail . . . It would be great if this could happen . . .
We don't have any traditions with a bull gator other than having a few in the Swamp. It's not a tradition here, it's part of the environment and landscape of the university. We are not the Gators, and being a cheap rip of version of another program's mascot is no way to build a tradition. We are the Ragin Cajuns, that's unique and no other mascot can duplicate it.
The Cane Cutters uniform is bulky and too top heavy and would not be conducive to the entertainment value which the chicken or a bullgator outfit would have . . . IMO . . . so if you want dull, that works . . . but if you want entertainment from your mascot . . . A bullgator (which I don’t believe anyone has) can do the trick . . .
