Ah. I see the confusion. I meant "no it isn't" as in that isn't the mentality for every team in the league. Not "no it isn't" in regards to this being a one bid league. It is.
A team can catch fire sure. 2014 Cajuns. That isn't the mode of success that should be relied on though for a long-term healthy program. We have the results of that method: 1 bid in 12 years. Whereas the Panthers who finish near the top at a much higher rate have 4 bids in that same time span. Also that 2014 team that caught fire is I believe our only top 3 finish outside of the #1 team in 2017-2018.
Winning the regular season doesn't mean squat! We have to win the SBC tourney to make it to the dance. No way in hell would we get an at large bid and if this team doesn't make the NCAA tourney, he needs to go...period. One tourney appearance in 13-14 years is hardly acceptable.
Winning the regular season will get us into the NIT. At that point, an extension is imminent.
JMO, it should be an all-or-nothing scenario on what happens after the season. Let's say we finish 2nd or 3rd and fail to make either the NIT or the NCAA Tournament. If we give an extension with the same salary, is it really feasible as opposed to finding and up and coming coach who would get paid half the price and can hype up some excitement with the fanbase? Only time will tell. As of now, I'll see how this season pans out. So far, so good.
Hire BBoyd . . .
If Jordon Brown will stay another year, I think having Marlin here is required regardless. Jordon is a once in a generation talent who is giving the Cajuns a lot of notoriety. I believe if Coach Marlin is fired the decision will be easy for Brown. I know this is coming out of left field and I have no inside information, but I would love to see Brown play his last season of eligibility here.
Regardless of the above, if the Cajuns continue to perform as they have so far, there is no way they fire Coach Marlin. No school would.
But hey, what do I know? I am just an outsider.
