Philly fans called him the Boston Strangler! Remember Bill Russel making an astute observation during a Sixers game. He was commenting about how Andrew could get his jump shot off so quickly. Said it was because he was a little bowlegged and didn't get both feet under him before jumping. He'd go right up with that wide stance which gave him a split second advantage over his defender.

And that is the difference between “good” and “great”…and why we have not had any banners added at the dome honoring players for years. UL has recruited good players for decades since moving to the dome. We had a FEW great TEAMS with good individuals, but no Toney/Bo caliber players.

Yup, Bill Russell said ‘he (Toney) would probably be mad if he hit rim right now’, while he was doing the color commentary.

Also, Barkley has said on multiple interviews that Toney was the best scorer he ever played with

Yes. If you were in the Blackham back in those days you would think of the crowd chanting Toney, Toney, Toney….

No doubt. I’m told I went to a few games in Blackham, but don’t remember. I did go about 10 or so years ago when we played there but obviously it wasn’t the same.

His first step was legendary. No one quicker.

He was definitely one of the first to have that amazing first step, and definitely influenced many to come after him. It has been said that Jordan's jab step was based upon watching Toney.

I am not a fan of Iverson, but his first step was pretty incredible. A healthy Derek Rose, and a modern-day Ja Morant are all worthy successors.

I read a SI article about the Sixers when they were winning with Doc J, Moses Malone, Bobby Jones etc. Maurice Cheeks was talking about Andrew, who was a rookie. Cheeks said Andrew would have the ball at the top of key and would wave Doc J out of the lane! Cheeks couldn't believe a rookie was doing that. For those that watched him play all 4 years, he started going inside much more toward the end of his college career hitting those lil 6 to 8 footers off the dribble. He was awesome!

When Danny Ainge was asked, what player he worried about the most come playoff time. "Not Magic or Dr. J, it's Andrew Toney that keeps me awake at night!" Most basketball
people beleiveif not for the stress fractures to both feet, Toney would have been a Hall of Famer. Charles Barkley stated that Toney was the best player he ever played with.
