At least with HS and JUCO kids they are your problem to evaluate once they get to campus. The portal kids have already been evaluated. It is a risk reward situation.

Some guys are worth the risk (Michael Jefferson) some are not (James Ohonba, still yet to be seen if he can break into the roster next year), but for a kid like Ohonba, to me I would have rathered develop a young player, then waste a scholarship on a veteran player that does not see the field. We could have used that scholarship on a kid that 2 years from now might be a starter, vs a guy who struggled to be on the 2 deep this year. Now had he come in this year and taken over one of the OL positions (where we were weak), I would be thrilled, but he didn't. If you get a transfer on your team that has 2 years left to play or less and he can't sniff the field than it is not worth the scholarship. A develpmental player is more valuable and has much more upside.
why do people keep saying this? Ohonba played in every game this season and switched from guard to tackle because of injuries and has another year.

Because you expect a guy that already played 3 years at a G5 and was considered a good prospect out if high school to be able to compete for a starting position against two young players like Harrington and McGovern coming off injury years and a RS Freshman Jackson. He didn't and had it not been for the attrition and numbers because of injuries, he probably wouldn't have played at all. This is why the portal is not really an option for the OL for G5 programs unless you get a freshman that major programs don't want. The top FCS OL are getting offers from P5 schools. Players like Ohonba that have played multiple years at a P5 schools and have very little interest from other programs, are not likely to help your program. Good OL & DL are a premium in the portal as well, bringing in top NIL opportunities.

I hope people posting crap on this issue over and over and over again about CMD are learning something here.

Correcting nobody and everybody at the same time is a talent reserved for the elite few.

You must be a human version of autocorrect.

But he came here and has played, every game, which given what happened to our OL it’s a good thing he was here. From everything I’ve heard he is great kid and teammate, and he did play and still has a year. Everyone Keeps saying we need to use the portal and in the same breath takes a crap on this kid every time. Like what did this guy do to anyone? He didn’t come here claiming anything, he was offered a spot to transfer and he took it, we have 2 coaches at Michigan state that this staff is very familiar with and they used that info. Maybe when everyone is healthy he can move back to guard. Maybe there isn’t a huge difference in talent at a lot of these schools like people think, outside of the obvious blue bloods. We got 3 guys from the same line starting in the nfl. If you going to give the kid a hard time at least tell the truth, he played in every game.

It’s not his fault he was the only portal player taken, it’s like he is taking all the heat for the entire coaching staff not using the portal

I'm telling the reason he played was because of the injuries. At the beginning of fall practice, he wasn't even in the second group. I attended 2 practices and ask 1 of the coaches his thoughts on him, and I was told he wasn't going to help them much unless he improves drastically.

Okay and we miss on guys all the time, this guy wears it like I’ve never seen before. Let’s see what he does for us next year, if he provides 2 years of depth then he Was worth it. Most freshmen OL aren’t coming In and providing immediate depth. He was 27th ranked guard coming out of high school and has no off field issues, great kid and teammate, zero issues with the staff bringing in those kinds of guys.

The difference is when you miss on a guy that has only 2 years eligibility left, he's taking away your depth at that position because you have to find another player to build the program from underneath. At least with a true HS signee, or JC with 3 years of eligibility left, if they can't help you right away, you have more time to develop them. Sure, it's always a risk that coaches can miss on any prospect. The natural attrition rate was around 25 percent at one time. But if you are looking at a P5 OL/DL in the portal and he has very little interest, that's a good indicator he is either a bust or a character risk.

Jay Johnson and effrem reed probably thought he was neither. My point is, it’s not like they took some Loud mouth locker room problem that nobody ever heard of. A highly rated recruit from a P5 that runs the Rock, good kid and good grades with inside info from coaches you know. You can’t get much safer than that and his story isn’t finished. Also, for those that want more portal…reacting this way to that guy, isn’t the way to get more portal.

I meant bringing more in from the portal, heaven forbid they would make a mistake and bring in a guy who is an actual problem.
