Is this the biggest loss yet?
In the rotation, but I think we’re deep enough in the defensive backfield that it won’t make much of a difference.
Looks like he may be staying in conference. Offers from ODU and JMU.
Never like losing a guy. Especially a contributor.
We are losing guys to the portal. Are we picking any up too? I know that doesn't seem to be Des' MO, but if there is talent out there that would fit into the program, why not? We've hit on several transfers in the past few years.
Brandon Bishops mother was the prettiest girl that I worked with on campus back in the day. She was absolutely gorgeous. She had that skin tone like she was from Grand Marias. Has nothing to do with transferring or the portal just thought I would throw that in.
It seems if and whom we sign from portal going forward and seeing who has gone where already......it totally depends on size of the NIL offer for anyone with proven on field talent.
Portal is free agency...for some it's a good move. Not so for others.
For NON Grad transfers.......To me there should be a formal reimbursement of some sort. G5 and to some degree FCS are paying for all the upfront development cost of players......once player is a proven commodity the P5 pays these players to leave with no actual university expenses to the P5 as the NIL is paid 100% by boosters.....but done so on behalf of the P5.
He said he is a grad transfer. I have a hard time thinking it is a bad idea for a kid like that to get a Masters at another school. If he can get into a "more prestigious" school for his next degree, good for him
It's not a ton different, specifically compared to JUCO kids. But usually if a kid is transferring their is a reason, whether it is because they are problematic at the other school, did not get enough playing time or something else. At least with HS and JUCO kids they are your problem to evaluate once they get to campus. The portal kids have already been evaluated. It is a risk reward situation.
Some guys are worth the risk (Michael Jefferson) some are not (James Ohonba, still yet to be seen if he can break into the roster next year), but for a kid like Ohonba, to me I would have rathered develop a young player, then waste a scholarship on a veteran player that does not see the field. We could have used that scholarship on a kid that 2 years from now might be a starter, vs a guy who struggled to be on the 2 deep this year. Now had he come in this year and taken over one of the OL positions (where we were weak), I would be thrilled, but he didn't. If you get a transfer on your team that has 2 years left to play or less and he can't sniff the field than it is not worth the scholarship. A develpmental player is more valuable and has much more upside.
