Rogers is a talented kid and will end up somewhere with a chance to play. But this will be his 4th school. Out of HS he signed with Blinn, then enrolled at USM and now is at ULM and in the portal. His talents have been wasted at ULM, their was a really good chance if he had stayed at USM he could have been the starter.
Chandler impressed me for sure. He could have started here and would have provided another element on offense when we struggled to pass block.
Hunter's HS film sure showed a lot of promise...can see why we offered him. Hard to understand him leaving unless he's not fitting in or possibly some personal issues pulling him away. Best of luck to him wherever he ends up.
Lot's of really good QB's in the portal, guys that started at P5 schools, guys that started at G5 schools and guys that were behind better players at G5 and P5 schools. Lot's of teams will be jockeying for position for starters next year. I would assume ULM will be a buyer in the portal market.
They have a young kid they like a little bit in Garrett Hable, but he is 5'8, then they have a transfer from NIU in Jiya Wright who is a running back playing QB. The reality is they will need to make a move in the portal and I can see them being very active there. I think Texas State will be a player as well. With Hatcher leaving Texas State they are in a state of fluch as well, but they have 2 kids behind him who were signed by P5 schools who have both said they are staying. Lot's can change during the offseason but here is a look at the SBC quarterback conundrum for 2023:
Troy--Gunnar Watson should be back as the starter for Troy next year.
USA--Carter Bradley should be back as the starter for USA next year.
UL--Will be a battle between Chandler Fields, Zeon Chriss and possibly Ben Wooldridge if he is healthy next season. My thoughts are it is ZC's to lose.
USM--Trey Lowe should be back and healthy next year, he will be the favorite, Zack Wilcke will be in the hunt.
Arkansas State--James Blackmon is gone this year, I don't think they have a ton of confidence in what they have seen from A.J Mayer, I could see them hitting the portal hard.
Texas State--Layne Hatcher is gone to the portal, transfers Ty Evans and CJ Rogers should be the main guys to get the start unless they hit the portal. Look for the possibility of former Nicholls and LSU QB and current Incarnate Word QB Lindsey Scott to be a possibility of following his HC from UIW to Texas State.
ULM--Chandler Rogers is gone to the portal, Garrett Hable and Ziya Wright will be the main guys in the clubhouse, but I see them going to the portal to be honest with you to replace Rogers.
Coastal Carolina--With McCall transferring out and Bryce Carpenter being out of eligibility, I would look for them to hit the portal, if not they do have Jarrett Guest as the favorite on the roster right now.
App State--I think we could see the Brady McBride experiment again. Either that or they will try to get a transfer or one of their younger QB's, but McBride will be the favorite.
Georgia State--Darren Grainger is gone, they really like a young kid Mikele Collasurdo and he will have the chance to take the reigns this year.
Georgia Southern--Kyle Vantrease will be gone and they will have to replace him, look for them to possibly look at the portal as well.
JMU--Todd Centenio is gone and I don't know much about the guys behind him.
ODU--Hayden Wolf should be back as the starter, unless they look to bring in a portal guy.
Marshall--Cam Fancher who took over for Henry Columbi, might be the future their.
As you can see, lots of shakeups in the SBC QB rooms next year, but some pretty good ones returning as well.
Update to this, USM just got a committment from Billy Wiles, who was a walkon backup QB at Clemson. He was a 3 Star Ashburn, VA. He will be in the mix for QB at USM next year. He chose Clemson even though he had scholarship offers from Tulane, ODU, Harvard and Bucknell. Very smart kid.
