Man was anything but boring. Probably his intellect was way too high for the guys making the initial interviews.
Coaches not good enough for UL, Mike Leach, Mack Brown, Blakeney. Got it.
The year Leach interviewed for the job at Louisiana, there were 11 candidates.
Besides Baldwin and Mike Leach other notables (at the time) were Larry Blakeney and Rich Rodriguez.
Contrast the PR hiring buzz of 1998 coming off of the dismal 1997 and 1998 seasons, with the PR buzz of 2021 coming off of 4-straight 10 win seasons.
Both were predetermined hires (2021 much better) but if you know the "boring" excuse to be a farce, the 'why not' excuses of 2021 would have made the Mike Leach boring excuse seem as plausible as someone claiming Bob Marlin was hired because of his energetic interviews.
ps That is not why Bob Marlin was hired.
Most fish become energetic when the come out of water . . .
No. Blakeney won the job, and it was an easy choice. Only, before he could collect his prize, it was stolen and given to toothpick by Doc A.
The time between 1997, when Nelson was told to run a program with nothing, to 2002, when Bustle was hired, was a purposeful, self imposed, virtual death penalty.
It was the most heinous act by any university president we've ever had.
