While full integration did not happen until the 1950s, there were some combat units in WW II that were integrated to some degree. My father [a white guy from Mississippi] was a company commander in a Ranger battalion comprised mostly of black soldiers. They never saw combat, but were at Ft. Lewis, Washington, awaiting transport for the invasion of mainland Japan when the war ended.
I lived in Philly for years and I loved Army Navy week. There is usually a ship docked downtown with all the lights. Sailors and soldiers enjoying the city. I never made the game tho, kinda bummed I never did.
Philly gets a bad rap, but it’s a fantastic city. Big city but all about America with all the historic stuff. Great foodie town.
