For all you baw's who were calling the O-Line garbage...
I agree they have been steadily improving. This week will be a real test if that improvement can hold up against a very good defense.
I love when we have bad ass offensive lines, it's the foundation of any good team.
An excellent article. I didn't have any idea the number of O-lineman we have already lost this year to injury!
In hindsight, we should be ashamed for not having faith in the system and letting them grow. We should have known better.
Let's be real, they have improved some but Arkansas state is not a good defense. I will save my judgement of this unit on whether they have really taken the next step until after the southern miss game
Nobody ever wants the facts. Everybody wants to complain.
Most of my criticism was focused on the play scheming & technique that these guys were being given to execute way more than the ability of the players. Having said that it helps a ton when your backs are finally doing the things they should as well. The Zone read has a huge dependence on cut backs & counter plays. If the back never attempts to cut back into the seem that is created by the technique of the blocking concept then it doesn't matter how well the offensive line blocks. The play will still turn into a pile of pig poop at the LOS. Smith was really starting to use his cut back lanes well when he went down with an injury against USA.
From that point until this past Saturday, our backs were doing nothing but running straight into traffic & getting swallowed up by the opponent. last Saturday was the first time I saw the backs as a group. I mean all of them as a group looking for cut back lanes. And when they did, they opened up big as you please. In fact, the lanes were so open I think it caught the backs by surprise. We had 50 carries for over 200 yards & not one was over 14 yards. That means almost none of our runs were TFLs. We were just solid all night.
The game tomorrow is the perfect mid term exam for this team. It's time to find out just how good this O. line, running back core & QB really are. The Eagles defense will provide that test. I'm fired up about this football game. If we can't get fired up over this game, we just as soon take up basket weaving.
