Bobby Kimball is from Vinton. He is currently making a movie. Do not know if he will be available.
Three or four people in a band can't withstand turnover ( or death)as much as 6 or more. Tower of power is a prime example. David Garibaldi, Emelio Castillo and Doc Kupka are the core of a group of 11 or 12 members. If you listen to tower of power today versus when they started you could say they are better in many ways today. The music has evolved.
Toto has 8 in it's tour group while journey has 6 current members and 12 former members. Both have evolved in their musical style. Not to say that is bad it's just evolving.
Many of the big band groups like Count Basie, Buddy Rich Les Brown had dramatic turnover in the group. Buddy Rich would fire a guy for missing a note during a sight reading session. He was ..... difficult.
Smaller groups like ZZ and Rush just can't weather turnover like a larger group can because the group takes on the personality of the members.
At the other extreme is a symphony orchestra. You may know the name of the conductor or even the concert master. But I can guarantee you won't know the name of the third trumpet player if you don't have a program. A symphony orchestra may have anywhere from 25 to 35 percent turnover from one season to the next. They could play the same program 2 years apart and the music will sound the same given the same conductor.
My point being, the music is written and the musician plays it. If the musician is any good you should enjoy it either way. The musician playing it should make no difference.
Here is an example of what I am talking about. The drumming, base line, keyboard and guitar solo were spot on. I think the brass section from Tower of Power did the background brass. They were spot on too. The lead singer jean-michel Byron was meh. He had a mush mouth. On top of that he had an over inflated opinion of himself and they ran his butt off. That's right they ran off the lead singer. Why,. Because they knew they could get another one. This was in 1990.
