I don’t pretend to know the inner workings of the program but I do feel confident in making on field observations.
The positives:
The front 7 plays pretty good against the run.
The DBs are good in press coverage.
Smith has run harder this year and is a difference maker at RB.
Garrior is a very good punt returner
Defense is good enough to play winning football
Negatives:
OL is garbage. The recruiting and retention has been terrible. Hudson is doing his best but does not have the size or speed to play D1 football.
QBs are game managers and are not difference makers. Neither have the skill set of our previous QB which we need with an atrocious OL.
WR are mediocre to bad. Stephens should never play another down. I did see open receivers but poor blocking or QBs leaving the pocket early caused them to be missed.
Kickers suck just like the past two years
Snapper sucks
Pass rush is poor. No difference makers like we have had in previous years. A Jones is a great athlete but plays too upright and can’t get under OTs. No one else has good outside pass rush ability.
Coaching staff is not bringing the right kind of energy to the team. Personal fouls are a problem and that is something the coaching staff can impact.
Recruiting and retention was bad. I know the staff is new, but they lost good players and did not replace them with even remotely good players. You knew you were losing your center and OT. No viable replacement. You knew you were losing your QB, no viable replacement. You knew you were losing a dynamic end rusher. No viable replacement. You knew your kickers are inconsistent. Again, no replacement.
In all I see a team lacking talent and confidence. I think coaching is partially to blame, but I don’t think Napier wins consistently with this team. We have way too few difference makers on the offensive side of the ball to sustain drives.
You guys are judging the man like he’s in year 3 or 4 of his tenure. We aren’t that good this year. Napier with the same roster, would likely not be that good this year. Those are the facts. Recruiting and transfers will dictate mikes success going forward. And for the record, he must not be in over his head on defense because those boys can play. Outside of rice they have given us every chance to win.
I’m not saying Mike is solely to blame. However, penalties and sloppy play are not things I can blame on Napier or the portal. If we are just getting outplayed week after week then I would take that argument. We are in most games but the things we do (or don’t do) on the field are what puts us on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
Another problem is we have no identity on offense. For the past few years we have been a run first team with a punishing OL and a stable of great backs. We also had a QB who could turn a sure sack into positive yards. That is all gone now.
I think a short passing game is what we should run, but the QBs are not accurate enough and the WR drop too many passes.
The play to Stephens before half was a great call and perfectly executed. Dude just dropped it…just like he dropped a well executed back shoulder fade in the end zone. We then have horrible execution by special teams.
That’s probably the difference in two losses.
None of that has to do with coaching.
To Bandwagon King:
Special teams suck other than punt returner. They have arguably cost us two games.
I thought I was pretty clear about all the offensive problems. Im ok with criticism of the scheme. We have no identity. I just see a bunch of players who have no business playing meaningful snaps at this level. We have 18 OL on the roster, but only 3 are playing at a serviceable level. The QB yesterday was awful. He averaged 3 yards per pass and missed open receivers to do safe check downs or scrambles.
The are not executing simple plays.
Defense is executing so it leads me to believe it is the players and not the coaches.
