Louisiana won four singles matches in the tournament
FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman and Shreveport native Kimberly Lyles won two matches this weekend at the ITA Southwest Women’s Regional Championships here at Bayard Friedman Tennis Center.
Lyles, making her first appearance of her collegiate career, defeated Rice’s Erika Villalobos in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. In her second round match, Lyles lost to Texas-Arlington’s Monicca Peciulionyre 7-5, 6-0, dropping her into the second singles consolation bracket. There, the freshman won a three-set thriller over Texas A&M’s Seva Iwinski 3-6, 6-2, 11-9. Iva Mihaylova of Baylor ended Lyles run at the ITA Southwest Regionals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
In other singles action, Susan Linden, Thais Bortoletto and Celine Vanweydeveld all lost their first-round matches. Linden lost to Jitka Vetrovcova of Texas-Arlington 6-4, 6-3. Texas Christian’s Karla Mancinas knocked off Bortoletto 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Darya Ivanov from Texas slid past Vanweydeveld 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Bortoletto and Vanweydeveld tallied the only win for the Cajuns. The tandem defeated Sammis/Stockinger of North Texas 8-4.
“Kimberly played really well this weekend,” said UL Lafayette head coach Justin McGrath. “She showed a lot of heart and we are getting better as a team.”
