The state House of Representatives won't give out annual pay raises to its workers next year as Louisiana continues to struggle with budget problems.
House Speaker Jim Tucker said Wednesday that the chamber will follow the lead of Gov. Bobby Jindal and the Civil Service Commission, who have scrapped the 4 percent "merit raises" for about 90,000 state employees in the fiscal year that begins July 1.
Jindal stopped the raises immediately for workers under his direct control.
The orders don't impact salary increases tied to job promotions.
Senate President Joel Chaisson wasn't immediately available to discuss whether he'll also suspend merit raises for Senate employees.
