An Opelousas teen is run down in the street while riding his bike. Tyrell Jenkins was only 17, he never got to graduate from the St. Landry Accelerated Transition School. His life was cut short as he rode his bike during spring break.
His family is now pleading for the hit and run driver to turn themselves in. Wednesday, they gathered to lean on each other in this tragic time and make funeral arrangements.
"I can't sleep knowing somebody killed my brother and there's nothing I can do about it," said Jazmon Jenkins. The teen was hit and left to die around nine o'clock Monday night on Bullard Street at Pujo.
"It's a tragedy that the 17 year old wasn't found anywhere from 30-45 minutes after the accident," said Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow.
The vehicle struck Jenkins back tire here, the impact threw him almost 70 feet. Police believe with that kind of distance, the driver was most likely speeding through the 30 miles per hour zone.
Opelousas police do have some leads. They collected headlight glass from the scene, leading them to believe they're looking for an older model vehicle. Newer vehicles don't have glass headlights. They're now searching for a car or truck with front passenger damage.
