Rice is every bit as bad as UL-M. By your logic Des should be fired today. It’s fine if you believe that, but the fact is a loss to UL-M is no worse than a loss to Rice (for all real purposes).

ULM is a rivalry, conference foe, state team, and the Cajuns recruit against them. It means more to lose to them than it does to Rice. The Cajuns rarely recruit the same kids that Rice does.
