Only 1971, 1972, and 1981. We did play together in the Gulf States Conference from 1948-1970.

Some trivial Lions history: We were never in the Southland with UL (I'll use UL when in Rome). We were Division II (old GSC) until 1980, our first year as a transitioning I-AA (FCS). We've had several close calls, but our win over the Cajuns in 1981 is our only "up" win in the I-AA/FCS era. SLU's first year in the Southland Conference was 1997-98 for sports other than football. First year as a full SLC member was 2005-06. We played football as an independent in 2003 and 2004. We dropped football after the 1985 season, reinstating in 2003.

BTW, interesting take. Learned stuff about some of our guys I never knew.

You should you use UL because it is what we go by. Anything else would be out of spite or jealousy.

So with that logic, we should only use SLU while in Hammond? Isn't that the desired branding?

    Thank you

That certainly explains the relatively few matchups.

The things y'all latch on to.

"When in Rome" is a show of respect and you want to turn it into a negative.

Thanks for listening, for the comments, and for correcting me. You are correct and the Cajuns and the Lions did not play in the SLC together. We just happened to play each other those three years I listed, and mistakenly assumed we were in the same conference.

If you are interested in discussing more, please drop me a private message. Thanks again!

What I remember most of SLU days in 60s was that Coach Russ F could not beat the Lions coached by Stan G. 0 wins. Even with Boomer kicking.

Considering our official name is Southeastern Louisiana University, SLU is the correct abbreviation. To answer your question, it should be used everywhere when abbreviating. Of course, it's a free country and we've been called everything from SELU to SLU to SEL, SELOU to Southeast. But we've been SLU since 1970. Administration discouraged usage of SLU for about a 10-15 year period, wanting to brand simply as Southeastern. But we've gone back to SLU for athletics branding the last several years.
