Yeah, I was kind of surprised with a few early ugly plays, but I guess when you take into consideration the number of plays he was in on the big picture was much better.

After rewatching it was a mixed bag. He had some really good plays and some really questionable plays. I think his upside is huge. But still unproven but I love the athleticism

Agree with you RaginDave. I think once he gains some experience and gets more acclimated to the pro game he will be a very good player. Needs to definitely work on pass blocking.

He has elite feet, you can't teach that. He's already a great run blocker, but his pro pass protection needs work. He never faced NFL type athletes at the level he played. I'm okay with him being the 6th OL in the goal line package and power packages while he develops on a learning curve. He will be a quality NFL starter eventually.

I don't guess you happened to compare him to his contemporaries. I tried. The only problem I had was inability to even get film study on Ikwanu, or Cross & the Giants have already given up on Evan Neal as a left tackle just as I thought would happen. They're trying to play him at right tackle & if you want to see the definition of disappointing, underachiever, lazy & slow go look at his film so far. The fact is Trevor Penning is way in front of his contemporaries for a reason. He has incredible speed & quickness off the line. It is lazy & not very thorough to say he was a mixed bag. Some of the blocks he was asked to make are almost impossible to make. Not only did he make those blocks. he made them look easy.

I sincerely doubt anyone's ability to analyze tape & look at his body of work in his first preseason game & call it a mixed bag. That shows lack of understanding of his role in the framework of the team as well as how outstanding his run blocking was. There are very few veterans who could have made some of the blocks he made in the running game. Hence the extremely high grade by PFF. He wasn't perfect, but one of his so called bobos in the passing game was a perfect block in which the QB bailed out on the play instead of trusting his pocket & stepping up into the pocket to make a play. Another of his so called bobos was the responsibility of the left guard as the defense was stunting on the play. He did give up a sack & a penalty, but his pass blocking was way better than the average fan, or viewer would think. One thing for sure is the coaches know exactly what he did & how well he played. And you can rest assured if this guy continues to perform the way he did in game one, he will be the opening day starter, or very soon there after.

Buy the way, the guy he replaced became the starter in week 15 of his rookie season. This young man is going to be a dominator in this league for years to come as long as he can stay healthy.

If I were rating my all time list of great offensive tackles in NFL history. It would read this way.
    1) Anthony Munoz
    2) Walter Jones
    3) Jackie Slater
    4) Bruce Matthews
    5) Ron Yary
    6) Rafield Wright
    7) Art Shell
    8) Andrew Whitworth
    9) Willie Roaf
    10) Tony Boselli / Orlando Pace

Trevor Penning has the ability to be as good as anyone of these guys, maybe better.

So Penning's total PFF grade for two weeks is 80.0 the highest of any rookie in the league. the highest of any Saints player who played two games. I'm not sure how PFF actually dropped his grade from last week which was 86.4 after the great performance he had the other night. But they did. It matters not. The man is practicing with the first team this week & James Hurst is on DL right now.

But it's pretty much as I thought. This young man has extreme talent on loan from GOD & the game isn't nearly too big for him as he has the heart of a gladiator & the mind of a student hungry to learn more & be the best at his craft. This could very well be the single greatest Saints first round draft pick in their history.
