An independent industrious administrator can have the best/toughest most fan desirable schedule in the country if he so desires.
We were independent for a number of years when there were many more independents. That didn’t play out well for us. It’s easy to blame the Fossil, but all those schools joined conferences with a few notable exceptions.

We can’t undo the Fossil, and we can’t undo the current tide of college football. Arguing about being independent is a lot like debating how many angels can fit on the head of a needle.

Your point is valid but technology has changed things.

You don't need other independents to be, independent.

If someone were to use the travesty Stokley went through as a current day excuse, they would miss the mark badly.

Stokley had no internet, no database, no staff, no email to communicate with.

Stokley was asked to be athletic director, head football coach, and scheduler for all sports.

Stokley had to manually write a letter or cold call with no idea if their schedule was full or not.

    All this for pennies.

Using Stokley's terrible experience as a 'we learned or lesson' is like saying I'm not going on an ocean cruise because Columbus said they barely tell you where you are going.

Sun Belt expanded ESPN deal includes an equal # of baseball and softball games on ESPN+ (more than 1,000 each) and the addition of instant replay in 2023.

Don't forget, there were about 40 fewer 1-A schools in 1986 than today.

    HUGE difference in scheduling

    From SBC board

    1. 50 percent increase in Televised games on the ESPN Family of Networks.
    2. Significant increase in Saturday televised games, along with an increase on Thursday and Friday's. No change to the 2 Tuesday games we get
    3. Basketball will get more guaranteed TV games (Currently 3)
    4. Almost all non football sports will now be required to be broadcast on ESPN+. Exceptions will be made for a few baseball/softball games if there is overlap in terms of home games.
    5. There will be an increase in payout. My understanding is that much of it is acknowledgement that production costs will increase. The increase in money will cover those extra costs early until everything is settled, so some schools may not see significant TV revenue increases the first couple of years until they get everything caught up

Eh. College football just isn’t meant for Friday nights. I know high school football is everywhere so it would effect any college team, but it just doesn’t feel right taking a Friday night from high schoolers

Making matters worse, you have a chicken and egg situation: Students see the student section on TV looking half-full (or worse) and get the impression that it's not the place to be.

Bigger name schools making regular trips here (Marshall, USM, App. St.) should help some. Nobody cares about no name programs with no history. Scheduling regional schools for the non-conference games would also help some. No one cares about Ohio.

It's just not a very interesting product for students, whether they live on campus or with their parents in Rayne. And it's not a UL problem, it's a problem across the board. Which mid-major programs are packing the house week in and week out?
When the Sunbelt is dictating 2/3 of your schedule overcoming this problem will be a high hurdle.

“40% of the games televised games on Saturday”. That means 60% on weekdays……

The sunbelt is quickly becoming one of the best G5 conferences in the country. Would you rather be in CUSA and let them dictate 2/3 of schedule. Or let’s say we do go independent we might be able to fill a home schedule with a SLC school as we do now and a mixture of SBC, CUSA and MAC. Never playing the same school consistently and developing any rivalries. The P5s aren’t coming here as independents just like they aren’t coming here now with us in the sunbelt.

If fans can’t get excited about the current state of the sunbelt conference then they are just clueless about today’s college football.

Now that is just a plain wrong, short sighted and myopic take.

Even with only 4 non-SBC independent games to work with, 'the willing to work' could still get, a P5 school at Louisiana every 4 years, and a quality G5 every single year.

Note: Because of the limited number of Indi games (4) to barter with, it would require a 5h and 7r schedule. The number of home games would go down, but the quality of those games would go way up.
