Started my career at KPEL under his ownership. RIP Ragin Cajun....
He was the original "Voice of the Cajuns." And he got to cover the true glory years of Ragin' Cajuns basketball.
I had so much admiration and respect for that man.
This is a tough one.
A tough loss for us Cajuns fans, especially for those who listened to his broadcasts. RIP Ron
Ron Gomez produced this video about the 1976 season.

The beginning is shaky, but it cleans up nicely and in my opinion is a must view for every fan of Louisiana.
ps please subscribe so they don't take it down.
Wonder if this was unexpected. His spouse, Carol Ross, had her regular show on 98.5 as recently as yesterday. I don’t know if she was on the air today. He was quite a bit older than she. I became a Cajuns fan (bulldogs back then) by Listening to Ron call the exploits of the Bo Lamar led basketball teams in the early 70’s. He was outstanding as a play by play guy.
The man had velvet pipes, for sure. RIP Ron Gomez.
The same Carol Ross who is good friends with Yvette? If so she did a ton for UL softball.
As a very young kid listened to Ron call then USL basketball games during the Bo Lamar era. It was literally the first sports radio broadcasts I ever listened to. Would listen on a small transistor radio and would bring it with me to family events and outings to make sure I did not miss any games. Very special memories of those broadcasts with Ron. As long time Cajun fans we have been very fortunate to have tremendous play by play broadcasters in Ron, Don Allen and now Jay. RIP Mr. Gomez.
Mr. Ron was a good guy and asset to the local and Ragin Cajuns community.
Prayers for him, Carol, and the rest of their family.
He also led a good band in 60s here. Often used for the military ball for AFROTC. Great guy.
When was his last year as the voice of the Cajuns sports?
Wish Ron would of won the mayor's race in '92. Maybe would of lead to avoiding the mess LCG is today; Bowen was so polarizing, consolidation looked like a good thing.
God's speed sir.
